CROWN HEIGHTS GARDEN CONTEST? — Brooklynian

CROWN HEIGHTS GARDEN CONTEST?

I used to work for a not4profit org (not in NYC) that held an annual garden contest for neighborhood residents. Businesses and some individuals donated money, garden tools, plants, seeds and gift certificates for winners and participants. We also held a big one day clean-up day not only for empty lots but also to help elderly neighbors who weren't able to clean/maintain their yards/gardens.

There was an annual celebration party to announce the winners and to give prizes, and the small businesses who donated (one pizza pace donated 10 pizzas for the people who pitched in for the clean up day) were given free ad space in a little booklet for the event depending on how much $ they donated for the prizes.

Does anyone know if there's anything simiilar in our area? If not, is anyone interested in getting together to start one?

A week ago I saw 2 neighbors use their own $ to buy plants and flowers for the ugly corner space on St Marks and Classon. (I hope the landlord sees what a great job they did and reimburses them.) I've lived there for 7 years and hated walking past that space.
Thanks, guys!
