Summer Work for 15 Year Old?

My stepson is spending the summer with us. He normally lives in upstate NY with his mother. He will be 15 in June. He is too old for camp. Jobs are hard to find these days for everyone but I am seeing that most require you to be at least 16 if not 18. We live in Bensonhurst near PS 205 and the Parkville Post Office but he knows how to travel by subway. He is getting his working papers.

Any ideas on where to try and help him look for work?

Thank you for any help that anyone might be able to offer.

  • Sorry you haven't gotten any responses. I don't have any specific leads, but the way it was done in my day is that you worked under the table until you were 16. (These days I don't think kids get a job until they're...40?)

I was lucky enough to know a guy who had a contract doing building maintenance, cleaning, trash removal, office cleaning, etc. If you have any friends or contacts who have their own small business, especially one where he can learn skills (and most importantly the value of work) - that might be the best bet.

    I hope this was helpful.
  • I remember it was a big deal when I turned 16 and could get working papers.
...If there isn't anyone willing to hire a kid for the summer, I would highly suggest an internship. I was a docent (trained volunteer in uniform) at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island while I was in high school, and it was a blast.

...it was great "work experience", looked nice on a resume, and was a summer spent working side-by-side with a range of people from my age to much older, just helping folks enjoy their time at the aquarium and learn about the plants and animals there.
  • I wanted to say thank you so much to both of you . . . It is nice to know there are thoughtful people out there. I am working on helping him getting an internship at an organization in Manhattan visiting elderly people. It is a very structured program that runs Monday - Thursday. This is perfect as he will be going back upstate for some weekends to be with his mother.

Its nice to know there are great people out there helping each other. I help I can do the same for someone else here in turn.
