Modern Way Lumber: closed? City Sub: closed?
I live up the block from Modern Way Lumber (corner of 4th Ave and St. Mark's Place) and it's been closed for at least a week. I asked one of the guys at Luna Tire about it and he also thinks they're closed for good. Anyone know anything about it? It would thrill me to think that I wouldn't have to deal with contractors' trucks idling all day long down the street from me, but I liked some of the guys who worked there and hope they're o.k. I also hope the place isn't being razed to put in another godawful, butt-ugly 4th Avenue high-rise.
And today, I coincidentally walked past someone telling her friend that City Sub is closed. I stopped and asked if that's what she had said, and she said she doesn't think it's been open for the last couple of weeks. I'm a little skeptical, because I didn't see a sign on the glass, and I'm not sure they're open Sunday anyway. And if they're out of bread, they're not open, so I'm never surprised to see them closed. Anyone know anything definitive about this? City Sub is a selling point for this corner of Park Slope. Just thinking about the place makes me hungry. I really hope she was wrong. Anyone?

Modern Way was (?) a great store. Truly, the last of the independent business model. Hopefully, Dykes will escape MW's fate.

I just had city sub last week.. They do close early normally, plus also closing when they run out of bread (as you mentioned)

While, like I said, I liked several of the guys working there, I did not think it was a great store. We had a not-so-small construction project recently, and while we would have liked to use Modern Way as much as possible (given that they're so local to us), they did everything they could to make us not want to use them. They were rude and overpriced compared to other local options.
We used Dykes a lot. They are a good lumber yard. -
City Sub stopped taking phone orders (and, as far as I can tell, answering the phone) - they have a note up in the store about too many fake/never picked up subs causing them to do this. This may be the cause of the rumor, but they're still open as far as I know.

That's messed up. How could one possibly call in a sub order to CITY SUB and NOT PICK IT UP? Should be a felony. Sooo good. -
I ate at City Sub on Thursday.

They weren't closed for months--I live several doors up from them and walk past it at least six days a week. But yes, people have gotten hip to the free parking spots.
The Luna Tire guys still don't know anything. I saw Coco (who hung out there) but we didn't get a chance to talk. -
I am very relieved that City Subs is still up and running. The place is great, definitely one of the best in the area for sandwiches (along with Gran Castillo and my place
