Anyone need someone to help them once in a while?

  • It would be great if any of the Brooklynians who gave you some work would come back and share their experience. Since many people here "know" each other (either in person, or through their online personalities after many months/years here), I think it would be helpful for somebody to come and say "hey, I met him, he's legit...he did a good job....he wasn't creepy or scary in any way....he was reliable" etc.
  • Yes, I'd love it if someone would vouch for me. I won't divulge their names, as its their choice to do so, but I also have many other references.

I also have invited anyone to meet me, if we just make arrangements via PM or email.

I have had conversations, verbal and written, with many of you - including you, Carmen - I've even had conversations with people who cannot help but care, as that means tons to me as well. If it wasn't thorough enough for you, I apologize, and will try harder to satisfy your standards. I no longer have a laptop to daily check things, which is why I suggest people email me, which I will get immediately.

Listen - its been hard enough to start this thread. Its not in my nature to ask for anything. Its also why I haven't set up a paypal or other money-garnering system to raise money - I simply want to help others with things, which goes a long way towards building my self-worth back up, and if they can give me something in return then I'm eternally grateful. Some could, some couldn't, biut neither received poorer treatment from me as a result.

My shyness is the reason I asked all to PM or email me, so not all questions or suggestions get answered in this public thread.

Carmen, contact me. Meet me in a public place of your comfortable choosing. I assure you that you'll find I am none of the negative or suspicious traits you infer.

    Best,
    Will
  • Why would I meet you in a "public place of my choosing" if you can't even tell me a VAGUE description of your employment experience? I dont need dates/times/names/phone numbers but I dont find it completely unreasonable for you to actually explain the kind of work you're experienced in. Furthermore, *I* don't need to meet you- I, and others, can simply forward your information to people who may be able to actually offer you work. There's no reason for me to meet you. However, I cannot accurately recommend someone who is so vague about his experience level.

Should I recommend you to my friend who needs wiring for his new office? Or a friend who often needs data entry help? Or a friend who's moving? Or someone who needs a receptionist on the weekends? Or should I forward your contact information to the recruiters who contact me looking for software consultants? Should I not recommend you to anyone?
I really fail to see why you can't clarify. That is, of course, assuming that this is a legit inquiry.
  • And, btw, I have contacted you. Multiple times. And you seemingly disappeared when I asked for some sort of resume or REAL references to forward...
  • Ok, Carmen- here you go.

I can do data entry. I can assist a master carpenter, plumber or electrician very admirably. I can help your friend as a receptionist on weekends or any other day. I can clean houses (and yes, I'm more than happy to do windows). I can drive. I can move people to a new residence. I can be someone's caretaker, administrative assistant or other sort of helper. I can do landscaping. I can paint (rooms, ceilings, etc). I can install and repair computers, servers and the like. I can provide guitar lessons. I can watch children. I can provide messenger or courier service. I can assist the elderly in their homes or outside, as transport or companion. I can hang air conditioners. I can hang artwork. I can provide graphic design services. And then some.

That's just off the top of my head. I've shared some of this with others through email exchanges and PMs, but now its in the thread, which I hope helps.
  • Add to ^ that:

"Can write a damn fine Dos Equis ad."

Seriously? I can do all those things and also can cook a chicken (ask mougar!), write an essay, ace a grade-12 honors history exam, fix a toilet and darn a sock. However, if asked I wouldn't call ANY of those things valid "work history" or experience. Saying you can "watch children" or that you're a former childcare worker are two different things.

why cant you just concisely state what your previous work experience is? Not what you "can do" (breath oxygen, omit CO2, etc) but what you're 20+ person business used to specialize in.
  • Carmen,

You're obviously not going to be satisfied until you get precisely what you want from me, which is specifics.

I am living a lifestyle that I never envisioned right now. I am embarassed beyond words, which is precisely why I will not go into more specifics than I have here. I have done so with those who have pursued my services and helped me, and that suits me fine. If it doesn't suit you, well I'm terribly sorry. Go ahead, blame me however you want, write me off and go to another thread. I came here in desperation, but also (for this extreme, but personable introvert) with trepidation because, as I said, I'm not comfortable detailing more here. I'm sorry that it brings out the critic in you, so we can go our separate ways.

    Take care.
  • lostlookingforlife,

Carmen didn't ask you to share in public the specific names of places you worked, or the name of your company. Your answer above is a bit of a misdirection.

All she asked for above was just what types of work experience and roles you have performed, for what types of companies.

For example, "I worked X years as a Y for a company in the Z business, and before that I....and before that I..."

If one was truly seeking a job, why would one not share that?

And people suggested organizations that provide food, shelter and opportunities in Bay Ridge, why pass on those?
  • everyone in this thread should expect to be gawkered, nytimed and salon.comed. This seems to clearly be a scam and/or hoax
  • also, for clarification, I *have* asked you these things via my personal email- one which includes my first and last name (which I now regret.) Even that amount of candidness is more than you've afforded us here.
  • So, lostlookingforlife, have you gotten enough material for your article yet? Surely you're not trying to stretch this into a book...
  • I don't know if you have read my pm... but if you have and aren't interested in helping out, that is perfectly fine.
  • Stella,

I assume that you've started your own little side conversation with Carmen in this thread, but in the case that you've PM'd me, nothing has arrived in my inbox. Just FYI.

  • Yes, sorry. My post was intended for Carmen. Just wanted to say that I would offer you a job if I had one to offer, unfortunately, I'm out of a job, as well. I do wish you luck on your search and will let you know if I hear anything about any potential work for you. I hope you are able to keep cool in this crazy humidity!

I do have a question about the Pm's on here. Do the messages stay in the 'outbox' until the recipient reads them (and then they are moved to the sent box)? Is that how it works?
  • ^^ Yes
  • Why do you think he is writing an article?
  • Oh, ok, thanks Mamacita. I've been registered on this site for so long and it took me this long to get it!

No worries about the post. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something.

I hope you're able to find some work soon as well. It is tough out there - I've never seen so many people at some interviews I've been on!

I've been staying cool because I've (unfortunately) been in the hospital for a few days (getting out today), so I missed the bulk of the heat, but I have spoken to others from "the outside" and they have nothing nice to say of it. Hopefully we all can enjoy cooler temps soon.
  • Just wanted to give an update on Landlord's offer for work, based on recent postings:

After touching base and a bit of back-and forth to glean info about the details of the space (for me to calculate hours and mentally go through my work process) and schedule a meet-up, I haven't heard from him since last Saturday. I have emailed most every day to say I am ready to meet, work, whatever, to no avail.

I hope he's ok... does anyone know him, and can find out or knows if he's ok?

    Will
  • Never mind... we finally connected, and are on board to start soon.

  • ...or so I thought.

Some folks have accused me of be a scam on this thread, and now I'm afraid that I am thinking the same of some who have offered me work. There are a couple of people who have contacted me by emaill, by PM, or by directly through this thread, and after days, or weeks, of me trying to connect every way possible to prove both my honesty in needing this help as well as my abilities to perform many variued tasks, I am met with silence.

I'm sure that someone will berate me for doing something wrong here again, because I didn't phrase something correctly or provide some info you wanted, but I believe the best way to prove myself is by meeting a prospective "client", and I stand by that.

PLEASE......if you need any help with anything at any time, contact me.

    Thank you,
    Will
  • OK, enough time has passed, and I have been more than patient.

This LANDLORD, who has obviously posted a lot here from his stats, has not responded in weeks, even though he said he had plenty of work to keep me busy.

If he has taken ill, or some other reasonable explanation, then I retract my statement, but all I have done is ask for help at a time of desperation, given enough information about my situation (and made offers to meet to discuss them further as they are humiliating and sad enough to not share with the world), and got some great samaritans to offer help, but this one, in particular, especially with his follow-up promises, has both frustrated and upset me. I had hoped for a semi-permanent position (I know my abilities would prove so), and it seems to be another dead end.

Again, if someone knows him, or his situation, please pass this on to him. He has not responded in a long time, and for someone who calls himself a landlord, that seems incongruous.

Flame away if you must, but I must say that my need for help still stands as importantly as ever.

    Thanks for reading,
    Will
  • Okay, here's an opportunity, and it is for tomorrow.

$15 per hour, and it will be for at least 4 hours, 6 hours max.

A non-profit school needs help loading some large furniture items from a storage space in Vinegar Hill into a moving truck and then out of the truck into a permanent location in Carroll Gardens.

Start time: 9:30am (absolutely no later) at the storage facility in Vinegar Hill. It is very close to the foot of the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn side, so very easy to reach from the East Village on foot if need be. Also very close to the F train station at York Street.

If all goes well there may be additional work next week helping to move other furniture items (desks, chairs, small file cabinets etc.) around inside the Carroll Gardens location. But first things first, the school needs additional help tomorrow.

Please let me know if you are interested at your earliest convenience (pm also sent) and I will provide additional details.

Once again, this is for tomorrow morning through tomorrow afternoon.
