St. Johns b/w Plaza St. East and Underhill....

That block is very nice. Most the builidngs appear to be co-ops. I used to walk my friends dog on that block at all hours of the day and night and never had any problems. With the addition of the luxery condos being built on the corner, I would imagine the block will be even safer.
As far as the "crazy lane" moniker, don't believe the hype. I have lived in the neighborhood (lincoln place) for a few years and have never encountered any problems on St Johns or Underhill and I walk home from the Q and 2/3 stops late at night and early in the morning. -
I live on that block and it's totally fine. Mrs. C often gets home late from work (1-2 am) and walks from the subway without incident. That said, you still have to be aware. A quick look up at the phone lines on Underhill should be some type of warning.

The north side of the block is definitely a bit more gentrified than the south side, but that may change with the new glass tower being built at the plaza st end of the block. [braces self for gentriconfrontation] -
That's a great block. I would be less concerned about crime than I would be about living so close to the construction site though. They are still working on the foundation and I think the building is going to be between 15-30 floors. Just something to keep in mind if you are moving soon and are home during the day - noisy!

Urban Legend Time: Shoes looped over a power line == drug dealers nearby.
I live around the corner from there too. No problem. If the people who are buying in the new building are as hoity-toity as the developers hope, Crazy Lane will disappear too. -

I thought this had to do with marking gang territory, moreso than drug dealing, per se, though I suppose there's a relationship. -

It USED to mean that, before all you hipsters moved in and starting throwing your vintage air max over the lines. -
Excellent! Thank you all.

It used to mean the owner of the sneakers got laid for the first time, or at least thats' what I was always told growing up.

as if the times is the authority on this kind of thing.... i read that article--I think it was in the city section--and it was basically like, "um, we don't understand this, but it's, um, in our neighborhoods." didn't elucidate anything, from what I remember.
