  • I think most elementary schools in Park Slope are some of the best, you also have Brooklyn Heights and PS 29 in Cobble Hill. Remember just because some of the schools are rated the best doesn't mean it will be a good fit for your child. Most of the public schools have open houses, etc. Also a great asset in your search is the website

    Good luck.
  • my 2-cents as a teacher:: don't base anything off of the school report card grade. There are A LOT of schools that got A's that aren't GOOD schools but are simply less-bad than they were the year before. Just a pointer when researching. I think that a principal's reaction when you visit/call/email or the list of after-school activities is the best indicator as to the school's focus and caring.
  • Great advice Xlizelix
  • Subject: We were in the same boat...

We are moving from Rochester, NY. to Brooklyn and which schools are best was one of our main concerns.

What xlizellx and stacey say is in line with what we found in our investigation. Another web site that may help you is www.greatschools.org but poke around the web and you will find other resources.

We ultimately decided the Park Slope area was best for us.
  • PS 321 was wonderful for our kids. There are other excellent schools as well.
  • ps 321 IS wonderful, which maybe why there are now 10,000 students.
  • PS 107 was also fantastic for our daughter.
  • NYC kids are zoned for the elementary grades, middle school and esp high school have more choices. Elementary kids generally go to their zoned school.

PS321 has a great reputation but poor fit if your child gets lost in crowds. PS39 is often overlooked but has a good rep and is forced to be more intimate due to the landmarked school building they occupy. You can also look into great magnet schools like PS372 but if your child doesn't have an IEP good luck. Admission is by lottery.

    Here's a wonderful resource: www.insideschools.org
