Large garbage pile @ Lion In The Sun — Brooklynian

Large garbage pile @ Lion In The Sun

There's a huge, festering garbage pile next to the Lion In The Sun stationery store on 4th Street at the corner of 7th Avenue. Does a stationery store generate that much garbage?

  • Great post... thanks for the info.
  • Yep, it's cater-corner from the large garbage pile that sits outside the 4th Street said of John Jay HS. Great, if you like trash. I'll call up some rats.
  • I used to live near there. That is the nutjob who owns the apartment building on the corner. He who likes to drag refrigerators with doors still attached up there too. If you keep an eye on that corner you'll eventually see everything man has ever created.
  • I just had a block association meeting with a city agent who specializes on rat habits and their control. Also had a fellow from the Dept. of Transportation.

First, call 311 (be patient as they REALLY try to find the correct info so that they can send along a message and inform you too).

Rats love ivy and certain brush plants. They make tunnels under ground and through buildings. One rat can have up to 16 babies if the weather and food quantities are correct.
  • Figures, it's cleaned up now. Betcha on July 5th it will look like Fresh Kills again. 2nd place in the Park Slob pantheon goes to the custodial staff at whatever John Jay HS is called now. Pathetic. And there's a huge rat hole in the tree pit at Tarzian Housewares. Huge.

I gave up my mulch container. It seemed no matter what was in there(plant matter only, of course) I kept seeing them pop out of the top.
  • Rats can jump up to four feet. They can squeeze through a crack in the door the size of a quarter, a mouse fits in a dime-sized space. Rats can get into the bottom of a trash can. Each rat hole houses an average of 15 rats (if the pickings are good). They are Norway Rats and originally fed on grains that blew across the dessert and landed in their holes. They are attracted to piles of debris like matresses, etc., and (YUK) love dirty diapers.

Be aware of fly-by-night exterminators. The only way to really get the rats is to siphon food way down (though tubes) into the holes. Bating or filing the hole with cement is NOT the way to get the job done. The BEST way to get rid of them is to get rid of the food source.

Please keep reporting the problems because if there are enough reports and actual findings the City will send a task force out to investigate the neighborhood.

By the way, you may not know whether your reports are working because you can't just ask whether the person has been warned. The only way is through the Freedom of Information Act. ON THE OTHER HAND, this is a good thing because it saves face and allows for less confrontation. You will know if things are working when you see changes at your neighbor or businesses' premises.

In many cases it is not only the owner/resident of the building who is at fault but the tenant's and it is almost impossible to stop the tenants from doing anything they don't want to do. Please note I am not a homeowner, but a renter, but live in a cooperative apartment. Even though people say they are into "green" things they don't want to separate their trash, let alone read how to do it. So, green can start from home and feels more manageable.

The fines do increase as time goes on.

Please keep reporting the problem as it is our problem.
  • When I'm out hungry
    I look for stuff
    That you've all left out
    It's late at night
    I just might
    Stop and gross you out

    Let me go YUM
Like I fester in the scum
    Let me go YUM
Big teeth I know you're the one...
