Heights Coffee
Any thoughts? Been there twice and so far I like it. First of all, the space is cool and the chairs are comfortable. Second, the coffee is quite good and the prices are extremely reasonable. And the staff was super-nice on both visits.
I was a Half regular until the weekend-morning guy started playing techno way too loud (nothing against techno, and I actually like his selections, but it's just not the right vibe for Saturday or Sunday am). Plus his espresso drinks starting getting sloppy. As for Prospect Perk, they boil the milk beyond recognition. Hopeless.
Sorry for the anal espresso post but a bad latte can really wreck your morning--and the roof of your mouth, Prospect Perk!

I like it. A lot.

Subject: Re: Heights Coffee
I went to Heights Coffee and they use bulk already ground coffee and have processed muffins. I guess if you don't mind that then you'll like it. -
As a confirmed coffee snob, I think Gorilla on 5th has the absolute best in the immediate area. They roast it right there! Bulk processed coffee? Only in an emergency. You can already get that at Lorena's across Flatbush. Why bother opening another coffee shop right across the street and serve the same dreck? Some people wil drink anything, and I guess that's what they're counting on.. You'll still find me at Gorilla.
-
I'm another Gorilla-goer. Their Brazillian coffee is the best! I don't care to think how many bags of it I've bought.
-
Where exactly is Gorilla on 5th (what cross streets)? It sounds like I have to try it (although it's a little far for my daily fix. I usually buy beans at Leaf and Bean and make my own. Otherwise my habit gets too expensive:
hours of sleep + cups of coffee = 10
Works every time! Or just titrate to a fine resting tremor. -

I'm thrilled to be moving to PH next month and finding a good neighborhood hang out coffee bar is essential. Where is Heights Coffee located? -
Flatbush between Park and Prospect, on the Prospect Heights side of the block.
-
My wife and I tried it yesterday- the iced coffee was way too weak. Almost as if they started with hot coffee and added ice to it.
They do have a comfortable atmosphere though. Plus free wi-fi.
But they have to work on the coffee. -
Carnivore- Yes, the iced coffee sucks, and yes, they do use hot over ice (!?) but when I suggested the iced coffee was less than thrilling, they comped me a YUMMY, iced latte.
-
Has anyone ever EATEN anything at Lorena's? I am actually surprised they are still in business. You can use their bagels as hockey pucks.
-
Why would you open a coffee shop unless you KNEW you made the best freakin coffee out there? Hot coffee over ice {or tasting like it} is as lame as it gets, like cheap diner style. Any real New Yorker, {or Brooklynite, for that matter} knows that.
Here's some free advice: Make some strong Gorilla Sumatra Gayoland, put it in the fridge to get cold, make some ice cubes OUT OF THE SAME COFFEE. Mix them when you get an order for it, and I guarantee you'd have a line out the door salivating to buy it!
-
I still think the best coffee and lemonade is sold at Le Gamin. They also have free wi-fi and a great backyard.
-
I couldn't get the wifi to work in the backyard. Maybe I had the wrong SSID or something. I can't recall.

I always have iced coffee in my fridge because I always make twice as much as I need in the morning. Good tip about the coffee ice- I have to start doing that.
Re: the line out the door: I know it's every business owner's dream, but to me it means you're understaffed. I've walked by Prospect Perk many times and gone to other coffee venues in the neighborhood beacuse I didn't feel like waiting on an excessively long line. -
Personally I always view a coffee shop as more a place to go sit and read or work. The beverage is almost like rent. I liked Heights. Lots of (comfortable) seating, including tables that are big enough for a laptop and some papers.
Then again, I'm not a coffee drinker (I pretty much stick to tea). I do wish they had bagels, though - I was there on sunday am and all they had were some really unappetizing looking pastries (my mom was a pro baker, so I AM a baked-good-snob, even if i didn't inheirit her taste in coffee). -
If baked goods is your thing, Prospect Perk has Bagel Hole bagels-the best anywhere.
-
Better than Bergen Bagel? Impossible.
Let's have a Dailyheights.com bagel taste test! -
Bagel Hole will kick Bergen Bagel's hole.

So agreed!Carnivore wrote: Bagel Hole will kick Bergen Bagel's hole.
Right again! -
Bergen Bagel sucks. Their bagels are mushy. By Bagel Hole do you mean Kosher Bagel Hole? Same one thats out in Midwood?
-
No. Bagel Hole is in Park Slope- 7th Ave and 13th St.
-
YOW! "Line out the door" was not meant literally, just that you'd have lots of steady customers for it. Let's let this place be open for a few days until we pick apart the staff.
-
Sorry, that wasn't supposed to be a flame.

I of course welcome the prospect of tasty iced coffee. -
They have the best coffe I've had so far in this neighborhood. All the other places are embarrassingly bad IMHO, but hey, I might be a coffee nazi. I found the music much too loud for a coffeehouse, but who knows, that could change. Overall, I'm glad it's here because Prospect Perk really offends my taste buds.
-
I work from my home in CaProPa (Carlton between Prospect and Park) so I was excited about Daily Heights being an annex office of sorts. But the past few times I've gone, it's been noisy with kids. And I agree, the pastries are rather unappetizing-- I don't even feel inclined to try the little samples they have on the counter!

Subject: disappointed
The place looks really comfy, but I was getting my coffee to go.
I had to pour my own milk- in the big picture, not so terrible, but Lorena's makes your coffee for you- milk/sugar, whatnot and has the same prices.
I'll stick with Lorena's for now. -
Plus at Lorena's they'll steam your milk for you for no extra charge. Although it's not exactly a pleasant ambience if you want to linger.
-
I went. Tried the latte. It was tasty, but they had no cinnamon. I don't see how that kind of thing is acceptable in this day and age.
I know people have been having a hard time with half, but I think they make a great cappucino (though it's true, I haven't been there for awhile). Also, half has blue sky muffins, which are the best. -
Went today. They had good STRONG and cheapish (1.95) iced coffee.
Howdy, Stranger!
