anyone out there have personal medical insurance? — Brooklynian

anyone out there have personal medical insurance?

I'm looking for advice on how to get medical insurance that is SOMEWHAT affordable and has some prescription coverage. I don't have insurance through my job (freelancer) and don't qualify for family health plus etc. Is anyone else in the same position? I'd love some advice. I don't know if finding one's own medical insurance will become easier once the mandatory insurance law goes into effect, but I'd like to get some insurance ASAP.

Thanks in advance!

  • Been looking into this myself. I'm trying to get a high deductible plan. So far, the website below has been helpful. It's all very frustrating. My current insurance (which ends soon and there is no Cobra option) is United, which does not offer individual insurance in NY : /

On the link below, I found the "how to apply" page to be helpful. There's an application and a link to see costs with various companies with that one application. There are regular and high deductible plans, with and without prescriptions.

I'm narrowing down which company based on which ones my GP takes.

Good luck and let me know if you figure out anything worth sharing.

  • Have you tried fracturedatlas.com?
If you can show you are free lancing or an artist.
    I'm not sure about prescriptions.
But 10k deductable is under 200
    The coverage is with emblem
  • Freelancer's Insurance Company. It's a BCBS plan. It's quite comprehensive.
  • also check out freelancersunion.org . you have to meet requirements to qualify, but as a freelancer you likely will. (i don't personally have this insurance, but i have thought about trying to get it.)
  • 10k deductible? Am I reading that right? Something eneds to be done about this
  • There are numerous plans available for people who are self-employed and who earn I think a minimum of $10,000 a year from such self-employment.

There are far fewer plans available for people who do not meet that minimum. The one insurer we found in that category which allowed use of out of network doctors was Atlantis.
  • I am always looking for insurance information.
  • Update on my search. Called some folks on the Healthy NY list to check on my qualification. They all say you need to have worked at least one day in the past 12 months and made money at some point. I've been a grad student and jobs were unpaid. I was told student status worked as "work" category and that proof of money made on investments counted as "pay".

Just got a letter and all my stuff back saying I need to provide pay stubs from a paid job. Very frustrated.
  • I called to beg and plead about this and was told "well you can get insurance with our other plan for only $1200/mo (HMO) or $1800 to have some say in what doctors I see. I just want a high deductible plan for when a car runs a light and smashes me...

Who has their own company and can provide me with a letter and possibly a pay stub saying I worked at least one day for you in the last year :)
  • This is so upsetting. What will happen when we are required to have insurance? Even though I make more than $200 a week doesn't mean $1200 a month is reasonable. I am still looking...
