When would the people realize the political elites — Brooklynian

When would the people realize the political elites

both left and right is only out for themselves.

$2 million dollars for a wedding is obscene amount in this climate. people should over throw both the dem and repubs. these two groups only do things to benefit their own political/lawyer class. no body has become poor for becoming a politician. look at the obama's they are now making millions a year. wtf if you are supposedly getting yourself elected to help people shouldn't you be donating all your money to the poor?

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) The wedding of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky is happening next weekend, and it's reportedly going to cost a hefty chunk of change.

Reports speculate that the wedding costs could total $2 million.

ABC News reported that renting the Astor Courts estate in Rhinebeck, N.Y., the rumored location for the high-profile event, could cost between $125,000 to $200,000 alone.

The catering, being done by Blue Ribbon Restaurants, St. Regis and Olivier Cheng Catering and Events, is estimated to cost $750,000. One company might be doing the cocktail hour with another taking care of the main meal and the third one doing late-night snacks.

Wedding planner Claudia Hanlin told ABC News that each company may charge around $500 a head, given the remote nature of the wedding site, along with having to share the kitchen and coordinate with two other caterers. That works out to $1,500 per guest (there's rumored to be 500 of them) for food alone.

Among the other costs, according to the report: $250,000 for the flowers, $40,000 for the music, $35,000 for photography and $30,000 for security.

Hanlin also said the wedding dress could cost anywhere between $5,000 to $25,000, but she pegs Clinton to be in the $15,000 range. Her gown was initially rumored to be by Oscar de la Renta, but recent reports have also said she will wear Vera Wang.

And while the Rhinebeck location is not yet confirmed to be the wedding site, recent Secret Service activity in the area is making the locale seem less like a possible decoy and more like the real thing.

State troopers working with the U.S. Secret Service told the Associated Press on Friday that they have gotten more calls than usual related to the posh Astor Estate in Rhinebeck, an upstate town where two Norwegian journalists were charged with trespassing as they snapped photos at the estate's gate. The journalists were on assignment, covering Chelsea Clinton's expected wedding at the estate for the Oslo newspaper Verdens Gang.

State police Maj. Michael A. Kopy said officers will be diligent about keeping the estate secure.

"We're aware of the visit by the former president of the United States and are working with the U.S. Secret Service as we do with all visits by protectees of the Secret Service," Kopy said. "We're responding to calls (around the estate). Anybody who is located on the grounds of the estate will be arrested and prosecuted."

President Obama, Barbra Streisand, Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey among the guests said to be invited to the July 31 nuptials.

  • Yeah, with a few wrinkles:

With a US President / current global statesman for a dad and the current US Sec'y of State as a mom this thing will not be a small, casual event.

It will instead be full of dignitaries from the world over, used to some degree as a networking event (as some parents do with weddings). That points to a more elegant, quasi- State Dinner complete with all the massive expenses that implies, uber-heavy security included.

It's also worth noting that Chelsea comes from the management consulting and hedge fund world prior to her mother's campaign, and her fiance is an investment banker, so there's money all around the table here and no doubt very wealthy folks sitting on the groom's side of the aisle.

So it's kind of the perfect storm of finance and Int'l diplomacy, definitely not something you'd see done as a casual ranch wedding with bales of hay (unless it was a Reagan, back when lol).

Sure, it's definitely over-the-top. And as you mentioned, not surprising.
  • do not forget to add "investment" bankers to your list of enemies. of course, they are the ones who really run this shit-show and they are the ones who really are behind the wealth of the politicians.

take a look at the politicians who were getting cheap loans from Countrywide...that's just one example and i'm sure there are many more ways that these weasels grease the palms of the polticians.
  • Well, I can't imagine spending that kind of money either, but if you think about it, its not really that obscene.

Look at it this way: that money is going right into the local economy, in our own state ( and the state will collect the taxes on the income and sales ). Its a good opportunity for employees of the catering business, florist, photographer, etc. to make money and I'm sure the extra visitors to the town will boost other local businesses, too.

I don't think this is anything to get upset about - other than the secret service, its being paid for by the Clinton's themselves, not the taxpayers. Good for them for spreading some money around instead of keeping it all for themselves.

  • Don't know why I want to comment here but...there are a lot of every day people who are going to make a living. Florists, bakers, security guards, drivers, stores, towns, hotels, bartenders, the every day guy.

I don't really care what level of society people are in any more. Whatever people have they have and that's the way it is. The negative energy of the press and all of this sort of reporting is what is really terrifying. WHO CARES? x

    Good night. :
  • I'm not sure I see how an extravagant wedding is a sign that politicians are only out for themselves.

An example that proves this thesis would be the ugly revolving door between congress and lobbying/industry groups.
  • Look at the bright side - not only are the local service providers going to see a boost - but there must be dozens of divorce lawyers just dreaming fo a big pay-off down the road!
