I don't have an answer.
But, interested! -
I think the answer would be related to what the group members are seeking to work on. For example,
Divorce/relationship problems
Addiction
etc.
I can't imagine a therapist operating an all purpose group for neighborhood residents....
Are we talking about a group that is staffed at the level that it would qualify for insurance payments? ...or a private pay model? -

hmmm, being that you seem to hint at some willingness and ability to pay $, I would consult a Psychologist or LCSW-R who works in the private practioner world of therapy, and has a big enough practice that they operate an ongoing group.
...This someone could have a focus on trauma/PTSD and (even if they did not run the group themselves) and could likely give you good advice on a group that is sort of tailored to the issue at hand: child sexual abuse/incest, rape, crime/violence, domestic violence, etc).
One of the most popular directory of therapists in private practice is operated by Psychology Today:
http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/
(the practioners state what they focus on in their listings).
You could call one of them, and describe the issue to be addressed. You (or a friend you are seeking help on behalf of) will get more privacy -and likely better advice- than they might receive here.
If that doesn't work, because you lack the $ needed, or desire the support of a psychiatrist, your best bet may be the land of OMH lic'd clinics:

Although not particularly handy when it comes to locating groups,
Lifenet 1-800-LIFENET
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/cis/cis_lifenet.shtml
can help folks in need of more immediate assistance.
good luck. -
Subject: group therapist
Hi,
Your post was forwarded to me. I am an individual and group therapist in private practice in Lower Manhattan. I have a few groups that might be helpful for you, if you're interested in coming a few stops into Manhattan. I also might be able to give you some guidance more broadly.
I would highly recommend avoiding the Brooklyn Social Therapy Group--they are in Ft. Greene and I wouldn't be surprised if you came across them. They are a cult and best avoided.
If I can be helpful, give me a call or an email. This is my website, and it has my phone number and a place to email me. http://tribecatherapy.com/
I'm a fan of group therapy and happy to help you find one that's a good fit. -
whynot: fantastic post! i would add to that, check park slope mental health. on 13th street. they are an omh-licensed program that does groups and are well-staffed with clinicians whom receive good supervision and training.

Well actually - my experiences at the Brooklyn Social Therapy Group are nothing but good. Everyone can have a bad experience in therapy if it's not right for them however they are not a cult. They have been around for some time and are quite established and do much work in the local community.
To the therapist above who felt the need to insult them and be disparaging about them, you only come across looking unprofessional and petty and out to bring business to yourself. Very trashy. Your post says way more about you than anyone else.
Brooklyn Social Therapy is about personal development (and group development) and has really helped me and I recommend them! -

I HIGHLY recommend Brooklyn Social Therapy Group. It has helped me as well as MANY of my friends. This is in no way, shape, or form a cult. I am quite disappointed in the therapist above posting such a thing. I think there is plenty of room in this city for all kinds of therapy, and if you were really good at what you do, you wouldn't need to bash anyone else.

i will say only that my experiences with them, i found them to be extremely unprofessional.

A cult?? Right here in river city??

Subject: Social therapy group most definitely a cult
You betcha it's a cult. Right here in Brooklyn!
Check out: http://ex-iwp.org/ or http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/n/newalliance/ or http://www.adl.org/special_reports/nap.asp#members or http://www.rickross.com/groups/new_alliance.html
I could go on.
I was also in therapy there years ago. Of course they're "helpful" or they wouldn't be a very successful cult.
Draw your own conclusion.
