7th Avenue Clipboard People
I hate to be so cynical, but I'm getting really annoyed that they (fairly aggressively) stop me every time I go to the post office, drug store, supermarket...
I want to believe that these people are legitimate, but why haven't I heard of any of the coalitions* they're collecting money for? And why do they only want cash? Do people in other areas have this problem? Are the clipboard people only descending on neighborhoods that are perceived to be wealthy and liberal (or naïve)?
*I've only seen Amnesty International, Planned Parenthood and Greenpeace one time each.

Yes yes yes yes. I've never seen them in Crown Heights or Bed Stuy or Downtown.
Anyways, there is a good reason for these endeavors to be interested in filling up 7th avenue. Have you noticed how many people actually does stop and gives money? I bet most of them do not even ask themselves the necessary questions, is this a scam or is this real? and if this is actually a legally constituted charity, is one that works properly or spends most of the money it receives in paying big fat salaries to its directors?
I never give money or personal information to people in the street. I rather will do a bit of research, and take time to donate online or by mail. A great link to start this process is of course Charity Navigator:
