Car Towed for Construction--not impounded--on 13th btw 6/7 a

Please help, we're supposed to go on vacation tomorrow (a road trip) and my partner's car is missing.

He parked on 13th street between 6th and 7th avenues and this evening, the car was moved due to construction (the sign was put up AFTER he had parked there).

We have called 311, 78th precinct both of which do not have any record of the car being towed, neither does the Brooklyn tow yards. Also, the number for NYC DOT does not answer--ever--it just ends the call after 20 rings.

Did this happen to anyone else today, Friday, August 6, 2010? If so, and you know where your car was moved to please contact me.

Also, any thoughts on where cars are usually towed to or who else to try?

All of your thoughts are appreciated because we are at a dead end.

Thank you

  • walk up and down the blocks in most instances if it was towed by a non dept of traffic truck or something like that its moved within an quarter mile. If the car was towed by a private company they are suppoused to have a sign from where the car was towed stating where the car is and a number to find out how much the fees are. ( they are suppoused to alert the police immediately about this too ) If the car is not recovered in either of these two fashions within the next couple of hours, id report it stolen as you at this point are not sure who if anyone has it and you could be on the hook if it is used in the commission of a crime or is involved in an accident
  • I've had two similar situations. (1) My car was towed for the shooting of a nic cage movie a bunch of months ago. the sign went up after i had parked. there was a number on the sign for the production office and i had to call them a couple times and keep insisting that they knew where my car was. Eventually someone finally decided to check wit the right person and and gave me the location. So just because they tell you that they don't know doesn't mean anything....you gotta ask a bunch of times and be aggressive in a polite manner (if possible).

The 2nd time, my car actually got towed and I called 311, the impound lot, the precinct, and checked the online .gov site. No one could tell me anything. I wasn't sure if it was stolen or towed. After days of waiting for it to "show up in the system," I finally called the navy yard/tow pound and kept asking the lady to check for my car by make and color instead of license plate....and then they found it. I had asked them to do this for days but finally found someone willing to do a little extra work. It turns out they entered the plate wrong when they towed it.

So the moral is......if you think they should know where your car is....keep asking and keep calling til you find someone willing to actually do the job right.
  • did you find the car?

if it's not in the police system as being towed, i'd immediately report it as stolen instead... let the cops sort out what's going on
