What to do to help????
While waiting for the N train on the New Utrecht platform last night, I heard some pitiful meowing. There, down on the tracks, was a poor little kitten (one year old or less) that was so thin and dirty that my heart broke on the spot.
She (he?) had a damaged leg and could not jump up on the platform; although you could tell that's what it wanted to do. Her (his?) face looked a bit beaten up as well. The poor baby looked so weak that I was sure if it ran into a rat the rat would win. I was thinking to hop down on the tracks and scoop the baby up but of course, there was a train coming. I got totally hysterical thinking the worst!!!!
Apparently the kitten managed to get out of harm's way but I could not see where it went. I will be on this platform later today and do not know what to do - any suggestions??????

If you spot the cat/kitten again, you need to contact station staff so that trains can be delayed for a few minutes while an MTA employee goes down to get the cat (ditto for dropped wallets, cellphones etc.) Unfortunately, I don't think that the station staff will welcome this inquiry because feral cats are notoriously skittish and the cat will disappear when the MTA staff member approaches. Otherwise try calling the Center fo r Animal Care and Control.

Get in contact with the station manager now. They probably know where the cats hang out and traps can be set out to TNR the cats and remove the injured kitten. PM me and I may be able to put you in touch with an animal rescuer in that area. Or call Feral cat initiative (find their number on line) and they can hook you up to catch the kitten.
