Help our Youth
The Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters (225 Adelphi St) partners with "Citizen Schools," an education non-profit that extends the learning day until 6pm, providing students with more time, guidance, and motivation to succeed in middle school and beyond. One of our most exciting program elements at Citizen Schools are our "apprenticeships."
Apprenticeships mobilize adult volunteers to participate in the educational process by sharing their expertise and passion, teaching hands-on, skill-building projects to small groups of middle school youth. In the past, we've had volunteers from Nike, ConEdison, the NY Times, and top law firms, as well as local architects, dancers, photographers, and chefs.
We are now beginning to recruit volunteers to teach apprenticeships in the fall. They will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, and volunteers commit to teaching on one of these days, each week, for a total of 10 weeks. Apprenticeships run from 4:30-6:00pm, and each volunteer is supported by a Citizen Schools staff member who collaborates with the volunteer to develop and facilitate the sessions.
Our students are not the only ones who benefit from Apprenticeships - past volunteers have learned a great deal from our students and the teaching process, and greatly enjoy the opportunity to share their passion and motivate young people!
Below are apprenticeship topics we are interested in having this Fall:
Photography; Theater; Film Production; Songwriting or Music Production; Spoken Word Poetry; Jewelry making and Entrepreneurship; Book Publishing; Journalism and Newspaper/Magazine design; T-shirt or Shoe Design; Exploring Culture, Teamwork, and Literacy through Drumming or Dance; Breakdancing, Mural Design and Graffiti; Fashion Design; Cooking; Restaurant Management; General Entrepreneurship; Entrepreneurship and Hair Salons/Hair Care; The Science of Cosmetics; Fitness and Nutrition; Team Building through Team Sports, Sports and Statistical Analysis; Stock Market Trading; Real Estate; Architecture, Blogging and Website Design; Advertising and Marketing; Philanthropy, Activism and Community Building; Veterinary Care or Animal Training; Community Gardening; Forensic Science; Child Care and Babysitting, Electrical or Solar Powered Engineering.
