Westchester Legacy Tour @ The Woodlawn Cemetery
On Sunday, September 19, 2:00 p.m., historian and scholar Patrick Raftery, noted cemetery expert and author of the upcoming book “The Cemeteries of Westchester County,” will lead a tour of some of Woodlawn’s most prominent Westchester figures, including financier Jay Gould, Flint Thompson, Standard Oil co-founder Jabez Bostwick and George Putnam. Participants will be able to pre-order Mr. Raftery’s book following the tour.

Background: The Woodlawn Cemetery was established in 1863 when the Bronx was part of Westchester. The southern half of the county, where Woodlawn was located, became part of the Bronx in the late 19th century. However, many of Westchester’s famous families and colorful characters continued to chose Woodlawn as their final resting place.
Cost: $10 per person, $5 for seniors and students, children under 6 are free
Location: Meet at the Jerome Avenue entrance (near Bainbridge Avenue, across the street from the last stop on the #4 train), The Woodlawn Cemetery, Webster Avenue and E. 233rd St., Bronx, NY 10470
Directions: The Woodlawn Cemetery is the last stop on the IRT #4 train. The cemetery is also accessible from the Metro North Railroad Harlem Line (Woodlawn Station). For those traveling by car, Woodlawn can be reached from the E. 233rd St. exit off the Major Deegan (#13) and the Bronx River Parkway (#10).
