Joyce Bakeshop

Joyce really is quite a ripoff, no matter how "good" there food is. I mean imagine going to Peter Luger, ordering the Porterhouse for two and it is a nugget of meat. P.L is expensive, but what you get also justifies its price. Joyce is a good bakery, but the the size of what they serve is rather eyepopping. What is the justification of overcharging so much? Anybody have an answer for that? Is it the econ notion of supply and demand? People want a bakery on Vanderbilt and they'll pay whatever we want them to to enjoy the privilege of having a homemade muffin or cupcake that is the size of a thumbtack? It is a local business and I think that a local business shouldn't be fucking us out of all the loose change in our pockets.
I mean cupcakes at great bakeries in the city don't even cost that much, if they do, they are huge cupcakes, man! -

honestly, the cupcakes I enjoy from Joyce - the red velvet and the carrot cake versions - are about 10x better than any cupcake I've had recently.
also, Amy's, which makes a fantastic dark chocolate cupcake (with a great dark chocolate frosting) charges around $4/cupcake and the cupcake is maybe 2 bites bigger than Joyce. some other joints, as I sit here and scan my Seamless Web account, like Mangia and Tossed, charge $4-5 for cupcakes that are mediocre at best (trust me, I've tried them). (as an aside, the best desserts on midtown Seamless Web are the key lime pie at Fresh Basils and the black & white cookie at Essa Bagel. though I'm sometimes suckered into the lemon blueberry tart from Mangia.)
so I don't think the prices at Joyce are that out of line. I think the stuff is expensive, yes. but, like other people have said in this thread, I'm happy to pay $2 for a quality, satisfying treat. paying $4 for a lump of sugar in midtown is not satisfying at all. and the quality, satisfying stuff in midtown (way way west - Amy's is on 9th ave) is double the price of Joyce's.
for the record, I don't understand why people pay money for Magnolia cupcakes - tastes like Duncan Hines to me. but I'm more than happy to let people wait in line for their cake mix cupcakes - cause I get to go to Joyce whenever I feel like a treat. -
Yeah, I don't mind that the cupcakes are small. I mind that they are small and two bucks.

yeah, joyce is kind of making my favorite cupcake place - babycakes in the LES - look "cheap" in comparison. but babycakes has all organic & vegan cupcakes that are $2.75 but bigger - plus everything in the city is usually more $$$. the problem is for me that i would like a regualr place in brooklyn similar to joyce but a bit less expensive. for example, i only go to babycakes every few months on like dates or something.

Are you speaking of Amy's in the Chelsea Market? Eleni's, in the same market, have amaaaazing cupcakes. I don't remember the price, $2 or less though. -

Amy's Bread, I believe. The location I visit is in Hell's Kitchen - 48th maybe and 9th ave? -

Same place, different location. No Eleni's at yours though.
