Local Authors (Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge etc.) Getting your book 'Out there!'

As the author of my first self-published Fantasy/humor book, I have been trying (as best I can) to advertise and market my book, without the aid of a regular publishing company behind me. But it's a tricky thing - What works? What doesn't? I'd appreciate any input/advice or other author's experiences with this. So far it's been flyers on lampost's, inserts in free papers and postings on free classified site's online. This is my 1st post in the Brooklynian, and it's nice to part of a local online Brooklyn society.
