Need a vet in the neighborhood — Brooklynian

Need a vet in the neighborhood

scrolls
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights

hi all,

I have lived here since 2005 and am looking for a good vet for my cat. I used to trek back to Jersey for check-ups but figure that it is about time I had one down the block...my boy is getting older. I read some good reviews of the Prospect Heights Animal Hospital on Flatbush and am tempted to try it but wanted to see if my PH peeps had any feedback on it or any other suggestions.

Thanks so much!

  • I am highly selective about what vet I take my cats to. I absolutely love Dr. Isaacson at Prospect Heights Animal Hospital. You definitely won't be disappointed.

  • Trek back to Jersey, dude. Unless paying an order of magnitude more isn't an issue, in which case, go to 6th Ave Animal Hospital in Park Slope.

In our case, we used to have similar aspirations, but after years of trying have decided to resume the trek back to New Jersey. There's just no reason to pay hundreds for a procedure that should cost tens (read: any procedure). And we've tried a lot of NYC clinics, in all the accessible boroughs. Cost-wise, they're in lock-step.

  • check out their yelp reviews too. i just went for the first time a month ago and dr. isaacson is amazing. it's a little expensive but totally worth it when you meet her and see the facility. it was so clean and welcoming and not hospital-ish at all.

  • i actually use the ASPCA in manhatan they are really good and not so expensive

  • We use Dr. Timothy Mann at Brooklyn Cares Vet (http://www.brooklyncaresvet.com/) on Fulton St for our dog, he's excellent. We use Dr. Henry Fierman at Cathedral Dog and Cat Hospital (http://cathedraldogandcat.com/) on 101st @ Broadway in Manhattan for the cats (he's been their vet for six years) who is also excellent and a lot more reasonably priced than most NYC vets. The cats have only needed their annual preventative care, so the trek into Manhattan hasn't been too bad.

  • does anyone have any thoughts (positive or negative) on 5th Avenue Cat Clinic? i've been there a few times, and i can't decide if i like it or not...

  • I love Hope Veterinary Clinic on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond, and so did my cat when we were there for the first time two months ago. We saw Dr. Alex Klein, who was terrific, as were the tech and the receptionist. In fact, we'll be there tomorrow!

  • Thanks for all this great feedback!

  • I have 2 dogs and used to have a cat, I tried from Chelsea animal hospital ($250.00 for cliping your dog's nails) to the Cat clinic at 5th avenue in Brooklyn. For the past 5 years I go to the Humane Society, they have the best prices and most experienced people. The only down side is that they are so good that you will have to make an appointment weeks in advance. trust me it is worth it.
