Pine Tree Deli
Just went to the new Deli (formerly Nairobi's Knapsack).
So much better space wise than Nam's. Lots of organic foods and a sushi bar in the back. Korean dishes such as Bi-bim bap will also be served in the near future. Nothing oiled cooked though. The owner said he is giving out FREE sushi samples this afternoon. There is a gelato/ frozen yohgurt bar too.
So excited to have this new store in on Franklin Avenue!

It looks fabulous. We'll check out the sushi later today.
-
Cool! If they start serving bibimbap I will be there every single day.....seriously.
-
It's more a market than a deli, no?
-
I went in tonight to buy some stuff for a small get-together. Nam's prices...not cheap. But everything was "organic" and "natural" and all that stuff. Nicer stuff than I usually buy for myself being cheap, but that's cool to have the options.
Very crowded -- lots of people in there. But the aisles were so much better than at Nam's.
Gelato was out, although I didn't see anyone buying it. There WAS a line for seating upstairs in the back ... sushi I am assuming.
Also, I'm told they're open until 1am every night.
And yes, much more market than deli. And no beer :-(
-
is this place basically a smaller version of Natural Land? (the place on Flatbush by the 7th ave Q stop)
-
Kinda, but there's barely any produce. That's still all at Nam's.
-
$7.99 for dried mango? I could get a tree for $7.99.
Nice looking though.
-
Sushi was GREAT. Thrilled to have this option in the neighborhood.
-
bibimbap? That would be amazing.
-
Ate the free sushi last night and I had to turn down a 3rd huge platter. The Korean food rumor is untrue..and a little sad. They have some jarred kimshi but no plans for any other Korean fare. The sushi was excellent and the family has really stepped up with a nice dining area in the rear of the store. sorry to bibimpap and bigogi fans but it will have to be at a 3rd location. The people have went out of thier way to stock the place with quality food..good luck
-
I was misinformed..3 or 4 Korean items on the new sushi menu
-
uhhhh bummer about the Korean food.
-
Went in on Sunday and talked to the owner. Yes there will be Korean food- but only a couple things. Asked about what will become of Nam's, he said more fresh fruit for now. Next summer, though, the lawyer's office next door is moving and he says they want to open a fish market.
-
Had the sushi. Really enjoyed it. There is seating in the back too! Enjoyed the bottled Kimchi too.
-
Much closer than Natural Land on Flatbush. Prices seem about the same.
-
Nope. Natural Land's dried mango is cheaper.
-
I can't say I'm a big fan of dried mango, but do like my sugar.
-
I will die of happiness if a fish market opens in the neighborhood.
-
There is a Petland on Fulton Street. They sell fish.
-
@trick -- I am quite surprised that there isn't one anymore. When I first moved to the area I remember the older men sitting on over-turned milk-crates and scraping fish outside. Now I don't see that and I don't see any shops opening. It's strange. Utica Avenue has a large place and it's always full. I would imagine it would do well on the Franklin-ish side of Crown Heights too.
-
There used to be one on Vandy where Joyce's Bakeshop is now.
Nautral Land on Flatbush is too expensive for fish.
I think there still may be one on Nostrand, but I walk to Western Beef at Franklin and Empire. There's is a fish market in there.
-
Thanks all, good to know!
-
Nautral Land on Flatbush is too expensive for fish.
Natural Land on Flatbush is too expensive for anything.
-
I think there is one on Nostrand around St. johns or so. and there is one on Fulton between nostrand and bedford.
-
There is a fish market on Nostrand between Sterling and St. Johns and another on President at the corner of Nostrand. The fish market at Western Beef is good, and the fish is fresh.
-
The plan is that Pine Tree will be open 24/7 once they get a license for beer. It sounds like free market dynamics appeal more to those who don't expect to be waiting on stoned hipsters jonesing for organic junk food at 4 am.
-
I'm just glad long term business owners, such as Nam's, (which owns Pine Tree) are taking advantage of the area's growing demand for quality food.
It is really nice in there.
-
It's pretty freaking amazing having a place like that on the corner. When I lived in a relatively hip Manhattan neighborhood, I'd have to walk ten blocks to get that sort of thing. I'm never going to curse being out of kimchi again.
And the prices are extremely reasonable on a lot of items. The Ronnybrook drinkable yogurts are $1.50 -- cheaper than from the actual Ronnybrook stand at the farmer's market.
Great stuff.

I am addicted to a particular brand of apple juice that Nam's sells: Zeigler's Old-Fashioned Apple Cider'. The price used to be $2.99; 64 ounces. Not a bad deal. I paid $2.99 for a bottle on Monday. I bought a bottle last night and the grocery store guy pointed out to me the new price: $3.49.
A fifty cent increase.

Gosh I went tonite for the very first time and it is great. I am glad to have all those products in the neighborhood at any price they charge. Saves me a trip out further and its there when I need a treat! Wow!!
Howdy, Stranger!
