NYT Coverage of the Park Slope Plane Crash

I just heard this great audio summary of the wall-to-wall coverage of the crash recently in the New York Times:

Brooklyn Plane Crash

December 17, 2010

On the morning of December 16th, 1960, two airplanes collided in the fog over New York City. The New York Times ran a triple banner headline, covering what was the worst air disaster in American history at that time. Fifty years later, The Times is covering the story again. Nytimes.com’s deputy metro editor Wendell Jamieson says the project highlights the stark difference in the way newspapers covered such disasters then and now.

  • I walked by that place the other day and they have kind of an odd way of recognizing the anniversary of the crash. On the side of the building are string lights forming the number 50 - and that's it.

If I didn't already know what the 50 was for, I would have thought it was to celebrate someone's birthday or wedding anniversary. It seems a little festive for what it is. It seems like they're saying "hooray for 50 years!"
