Alternatives to Ikea?

My roommate and I are looking for a sofabed and a dinette set (table and four chairs) for our apartment that ideally won't look too Ikea-esque and would also be affordable, hopefully supporting a local merchant. We tend to go for 1930s-1960s aesthetics. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Some of my furniture came off craigslist. You have to be diligent and weed out people that are only selling junk, but I've been so happy with all my Art Deco and Mid-Century finds.

If you have the money, the antique stores on Atlantic are great, there is also one or two antique stores on 5th ave in the teens (11th st and on), and of course Williamsburg has tons of retro furniture shops.

You might want to try Room and Board if you are looking for new furniture. They have a nice cross section from traditional to modern styles and while they are a higher price point than Ikea, the quality is also higher.
