I heard the same thing and also thought it sounded too much like a "boom" to be a gun shot. Haven't walked down the block yet to see anything though.

Chances are that it was in a manhole . THe city uses salt on the snow and from time to time the salt eats the covering on the high voltage wires and causes arcing and small explosions. Last week such an event caused several houses to lose power in the area and its not uncommon for this to happen. Call Con Ed if you lose power and if youre a landlord you can call in a licensed electrician who can jump out the fuse box if only some circuts are out. Con Edison will reimburse the cost if you mail them a copy of the invoice and switch the wiring back if and when they come out to repaid the damaged street wire
