INSPIRED BY GREEN-WOOD: A VISIT WITH ARTIST SAUL CHERNICK

We are especially proud to present our Greenwood Heights neighbor and artist, Saul Chernick. With his unique ink-on-paper style, Chernick creates “zany, consummately skillful drawings” (The New York Times) with “the episodic and atmospheric feel of a gothic graphic novel.” Chernick, a big fan of Green-Wood who often strolls the grounds for inspir...ation, has created an extraordinary panorama of Green-Wood that measures 4 inches high by 34 feet long. During this program, Chernick will talk about his Green-Wood series, as well as other selected works.

Artist talk: free (suggested donation $5).

Reservations recommended.

THE VALENTINE’S DAY THAT CHANGED AMERICA

On February 14, 1884, two days after a young Theodore Roosevelt became a new father, he suffered an unimaginable tragedy. His mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, succumbed to typhoid fever and was followed in death just eleven hours later by his wife Alice, who died of Bright’s disease. How T.R. coped with this tragedy would have a pivotal impact on his life, the country and the world. Join Patricia O’Toole, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt After the White House, for a discussion. Afterwards join Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a visit to the gravesites of Alice and mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, and other members of the family.

Book talk: free.

GEORGE WASHINGTON’S AMERICA: A BIOGRAPHY THROUGH HIS MAPS

“Exquisite reproductions of the maps display 18th-century America as Washington saw it.“ —The New York Times

Friend of Green-Wood and best-selling author Barnet Schecter talks about his most recent and widely praised compendium of the maps George Washington both drew and purchased. The book crafts a unique portrait of the Father of Our Country. Following the book talk in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel, Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman will lead a tour of the Battle of Brooklyn. Washington’s first battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence was fought, in part, across Green-Wood’s grounds.

Book talk: free.
