Huh. This might actually be a good way to learn snowboarding without having to get a lift pass. Not sure how much one has to pay for the lessons, though.

NEED A PLACE TO CHILL?

SKI, SNOWBOARD AND MORE AT WINTER JAM 2011

DATE: Saturday, February 5, 2011

TIME: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

LOCATION: Prospect Park Nethermead

Enter the Park at Ocean Avenue and Lincoln Road

The Parks Department, in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance, will host Winter Jam NYC, the annual winter sports festival, at the Nethermead in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. This FREE event is open to the public.

Our partners at the Olympic Regional Development Authority will be blowing fresh snow, weather permitting, the week before the event creating the stage for the Lake Placid Snow Field, Winter Jam’s snow sports activity center. New Yorkers can learn to ski and snowboard with instructors from Mountain Creek, in addition to trying cross-country skiing and snow shoeing. Participants can sample treats and get hot drinks from the Pride of New York Warming Hut.

Red Bull will host the Butter Cup, a national contest series, where professional and amateur snowboarders and skiers can show off their best tricks on multi-featured custom ramps, pads and rails. Winners take home the Butter Cup Trophy and an arm full of new gear.

For more information, please visit www.nyc.gov/parks, keyword: Winter Jam, or call 311.

  • I think the lessons are free. They used to hold this festival in Central Park. Bummed I won't be here...it sounds fun!

  • I'm supposed to go to Okemo in Vermont on the 5th.., but may cancel to be there Sat!!!!

Yaah, it's in Brooklyn this year!!!

  • This event took place on the Lower East Side two years ago. Despite being held on a day that was too warm to maintain the snow, it was still fun to watch.

The city (with support from corporate sponsors) built a huge "hill" from plywood and those big shipping containers and pros advertised themselves and local ski places.

    ...I drank hot chocolate.
