  • tardis action to commence

  • I went on Friday night. Pretty cool. Nice big booths.

  • Went yesterday with the other better half, and am looking forward to future visits. The owner, Andy, is top-notch.

  • Mrs Whynot, myself, and Nomad went Saturday night.

We consumed a few Trainwrecks and a few Kelsos.

    ...we left happy.

  • Went to this bar for the first time tonight. Was disturbed by what appeared to be some racist paraphernalia. In the booth closest to the back of the bar, there is a lamp of really questionable taste. The white woman sitting in the booth defended it by explaining that it was part of the "Dr. Who" theme. I don't know anything about Dr. Who, but my friend described it as "a racist BBC show."

    Not planning on returning.

  • We tried this place recently and left pretty quickly. We didn't sit in the booths, so I can comment on the "racist paraphernalia". But no beers on tap? The place is much smaller than it appears from the outside. There was no one behind the bar and, after waiting about 10 minutes for someone to serve us, we left and went to Washington Commons. We'll definitely give it another try, but only after they've had time to iron out the wrinkles.

I sat in that booth last night and actually heard about your comment about the lamp being racist. It's a monkey in a suit and hat- how exactly do you see that as racist?!?!?! The monkey doesn't look like a human of any race- it looks like a monkey.

Oh, and by the way, your friend knows shit. Dr Who is so completely NOT a racist show- it's about a time traveler. It's science fiction, fer cryin' out loud!

    Glad you won't be back.

  • I like Dr Who, but especially the old Twilight Zone episodes.

  • Apparently you're not aware of the unfortunate history of racist depictions of African-Americans as monkeys, the legacy of which we see in antique knick-knacks and lamps like the one in that booth. Here's some food for thought:

There's no need to be so defensive.

  • I haven't seen the lamp in question, and have only been to the Way Station once, but my college years were filled with research on the topic that has led me to believe that Dr. Who's enemy are the Daleks.

P.S. I agree with Jack, the owners are going to need to get some beers on tap in order to build a loyal crowd of customers. I'm not sure a Dr. Who themed bathroom will keep the neighborhood's regular drinkers coming in, and being a "destination - special occasion bar" strikes me as pretty risky.

  • The owner told me he was going to run a tap system as he builds relationships with the local distributors, he had only just gotten his liquor license the day before it opened. So for now he's justing doing a rotating keg. I've been in there several times now and have never had to wait for a drink although I do know he goes out for a smoke break every so often but usually when the bar is a little slower or he has his second bartender on staff.

  • pinandneedles- why, yes, I an actually quite aware of the history (I'm not as young as the girl in the picture).

What I'm defensive about is you trying to make this lamp something that it is not. Of course, there is that type of 'art' out there and I'm also very aware of what it represents. But I have an educated eye- the lamp at Waystation does not fall into that genre.

Your article was an interesting choice to use in this situation and unfortunately, doesn't quite make your point. I'm with the NAACP president who's final statement represents my opinion:

But others may just be reading too much into the statues, said Larry Maddox, president of Springfield’s NAACP chapter.

“You know what I see in that?” he said. “A monkey in a tux.”

  • Said Monkey.

  • That does look like old school lawn jockey.

  • Apparently they're going to show the new episodes of Dr. Who every Sunday night. Or so I read.

  • The website College Humor recently put out spoof instruction sheets which rename complicated devices into something IKEA would call them and provide "simple" assembly instructions.

In honor of the Way Station's bathroom and Dr. Who, I post the attached:

  • Newsflash: I finally learn what Steam punk is.
