New Summer Opportunity for Writers in Downtown Bklyn

Calling all fiction writers:

We are now accepting applications for the first annual Summer Writers Lab at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University. This urban fiction immersion will be held from June 16-18, 2011, and features Marlon James, Jennifer Egan and Gabriel Cohen leading master fiction workshops. There will also be readings, performances, and panels by an assortment of writers (including Rick Moody and Wesley Stace), publishers, and agents.

Many of the events taking place during the Summer Writers Lab are open to the public for $5, and we are working to get this information to as many fiction-lovers around the borough as possible.

Jessica Hagedorn, novelist and playwright, is at the helm as Director of the Lab, and she has crafted a flexible, affordable program designed to provide both beginning and advanced writers the opportunity to hone their skills in intimate settings.

Jennifer Egan, Marlon James, and Gabriel Cohen to Lead Summer Writers Lab at Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University

Fiction and crime fiction the focus of workshops, panels, readings and performances

June 16-18, 2011

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Critically-acclaimed writers Gabriel Cohen, Jennifer Egan, and Marlon James will lead the first annual Summer Writers Lab at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University June 16-18, 2011. The Summer Writers Lab (SWL) is hosted by the M.F.A in Creative Writing Program and will include workshops, panels, readings and performances by prominent writers working in fiction and crimefiction. The program was designed to provide both beginning and advanced writers the opportunity to hone their skills in intimate settings. The Brooklyn Campus is located in Fort Greene, a vibrant center for literary and performing arts.

“It is important that writers receive feedback about their work. It is a crucial element in the writing process” Jessica Hagedorn, award-winning writer and director of the program, said. “The Summer Writers Lab will be an opportunity for participants to interact with wonderful writers at the top of their game.” In addition to workshop leaders Egan, James, and Cohen, Rick Moody and Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) will be on-hand for a musical performance and on-stage conversation.

Workshops will be held during three sessions: Thursday through Sunday, June 16-18, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m or 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Applicants need to submit a writing sample, along with a $20 application fee. Tuition is $300 for one workshop or $500 for two workshops. Admission to panels and events is included in the workshop fees. Opening Night Reading: Gabriel Cohen, Jennifer Egan, and Marlon James. Hosted by Jessica Hagedorn. Followed by book signing and reception. Tickets: Free for Summer Writers Lab participants; $5 for the general public.

Friday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Conversation and Performance: Rick Moody and Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) followed by Q&A with audience, book signing and reception. Tickets: Free for SWL participants; $5 for the general public.

Saturday,June 18 at 1:00 p.m.

The Literary Marketplace in the 21st Century: A lunchtime panel with Rakesh Satyal, Editor at HarperCollins and author of the acclaimed novel, Blue Boy; JohnnyTemple, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Akashic Books and Chair of the Brooklyn Book Festival; and other professionals in the publishing industry. Harold Augenbraum, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation and presenter of the National Book Awards, will moderate the panel. About the Summer Writers Lab Writers

Gabriel Cohen is the author of an acclaimed series of crime novels, which are set in Brooklyn and feature detective Jack Leightner. His debut novel “Red Hook” was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. He also is the author of “The Ninth Step,” “The Graving Dock,” “Boombox,” “Neptune Avenue” and the nonfiction book “Storms Can’t Hurt the Sky.” He has written for The New York Times, Poets & Writers, Time Out New York and other publications. Jennifer Egan is the author of “A Visit From the Goon Squad,” published in 2010. Her other work includes “The Invisible Circus,” which was released as a feature film by Fine Line in 2001; “Emerald City and Other Stories; Look at Me,” which was nominated for the National Book Award in 2001; and the bestselling “The Keep.” Also a journalist, she writes frequently for The New York Times Magazine.

Marlon James was born in Kingston, Jamaica. His most recent novel, “The Book Of Night Women” was internationally acclaimed and voted Best Book Of 2009 by the Library Journal. His first novel, “John Crow’s Devil,” was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Commonwealth Prize, and was a New York Times Editor’s Choice. Currently a professor of literature and creative writing at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, he is at work on a new novel, “A Brief History of Seven Killings.” He divides his time between Jamaica, New York City and the Twin Cities.

Rick Moody has published novels, short fiction and nonfiction, including “The Four Fingers of Death,” “Garden State” and “The Ice Storm,” which was adapted into a feature film directed by Ang Lee; “The Ring of Brightest Angels Around Heaven,” “The Black Veil: A Memoir with Digressions,” “The Diviners; and Right Livelihoods: Three Novellas.” His work in music has been extensive. It includes the album “Rick Moody and One Ring Zero” and two albums with The Wingdale Community Singers. A new book, “Discreet Music: Essays on Listening,” is forthcoming.

Wesley Stace is the author of the international bestseller “Misfortune,” as well as the novel “by George.” His most recent novel, “Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer“ will be published by Picador in February 2011.
