God Is...
Anybody checked out this new West Indian place on Washington Ave. between Prospect and St. Marks?
I had some pretty good banana porridge for breakfast the other day, but that's all. I wanted to try the doubles but they didn't have any ready when I stopped in. The lady behind the counter was super friendly.
Thoughts?

Well, I'm the insurance broker who handles her workers comp policy and she's trying to do things right so that's a good sign. Owner's name is Elicia.
-
I feel like I'm at the epicenter for absolutely horrendous restaurant names.

Would it be proper for a competitor to open a place nearby called "God isn't"?Is the food any good?
I've walked by a few times, but can't imagine leaving The Islands (near EP)
-
While I love The Islands, I really do, they never seem to have roti. This makes me very, very sad, so I no longer even ask them. Also, I don't think I've seen doubles on their menu, so this new place (who cares what it's called, as long as it's good) could be a nice addition- pick up the slack from Islands.

Would you eat at a placed called Festering Bowels?
Names do matter and "God Is" doesn't make me the slightest bit curious about their food or the experience. For me, it's reminiscent of someone preaching loudly to a captive audience on a rush hour train. I like my food without the side dish of religious agenda, thank you very much.

No, but I'd get my step kids' dinner from there.
-

Oh please, that too! ha!
-
i ate there last week, had the jerk pork. it was spicy and delicious.

According to the city notice on the door, this place has been closed since mid Dec 2012, by the Dept of Health.
Being that it has been over a month, God Is may be dead.
Of course, whether God is alive remains opens to discussion.

-
Hey God - if you give me a wealthy wife who comes to me with a large dowry I might be persuaded to move back to Brooklyn.

-
I know the owner and she has no plans to reopen.
-
Any idea how much her fines were from DOHMH?
....or, are they telling her that she must make very expensive renovations that she can not afford?
And, last question:
Anyone have an opinion about what should go in that space next?
-
How about a restaurant called "God Ain't?"
-
Being that the place beside it is named Skazzy, we may need to first decide whether god prefers to be thought of as Skazzy or not.
So many mysteries.
-
The neighborhood sure could use another artisanal mayonnaise shop.
-
Sounds risky. Maybe artisanal mustard instead.
-
From what she told me, and she never mentioned she was closing due to the Health Dept, she said the neighborhood people wanted more of a sit down type place and she didn't have the space for tables and ended up being more take out. Although I can't say for sure as I was never there. In any event she had been planning to close for some time.
-
Although they may not deserve it, the Health Department claims credit for the closure on the door.
-
Mediocre at best...
-
The storefront presently has a large poster that says "Business For Sale".
...the notice from DOHMH is no longer visible
-
A new sign is up over this space advertising the "Hole in the Wall Deli."
-
The Hole In The Wall Deli is also a grocery. It's a deli/grocery. It's a bodega.
Call it ungentrification? New hair salons, bodegas, barber shops...maybe Franklin Avenue has become too expensive and Washington is considerably cheaper.
By the way, re: the sports bar that is taking over the Minor Arcana space: I am so pissed off that the stupid community board brushed aside the reputable, caring, concerned owners of Freddie's bar and then allowed a lame sports bar to open instead. This place is trouble, just watch. It's a self perpetuating cycle, and now the community board will have more ammunition to fight the opening of new bars on Washington Avenue once someone gets into a brawl outside of this one.
-
Do you have information on the folks who are opening the sports bar? How do you know that it is going to be lame and that there will be fights?
-
What is lame to one, is heaven to another.
-
I know nothing about the place. Merely a hunch, time will tell. Sports bars can be douchey, and those types get drunk, fight, scream, and urinate in public. Alpha males, ya know?
What really irks me is that the Freddies people worked very hard to preserve this neighborhood in the face of the juggernaut that is Atlantic Yards. And they were repaid by being asked to close a potential Washington Avenue bar at midnight on weekdays.
-
This thread talks about the new sports bar: http://brooklynian.com/forum/prospect-heights/new-bar-on-706-washington-ave-the-minor-arcana
IMO, whether the bar will be lame remains to be seen.

Given its small size, I think Hole in the Wall Deli would do best if just made sandwiches. ...an alternative to the sit down fancy places.

I live near Plan B, a sports bar, and anytime I've been in there or walked past it, the patrons are perfectly civil and simply enjoying a game on TV. Actually, I always found Freddy's, with its wannabe "artist" patrons and live music, to be much more raucous than Plan B. But we shouldn't let reality get in the way of a good stereotype, huh?
