Verizon awful service
Our phone and internet service went out over a week ago and we’re having an awful time getting service from Verizon to repair our phone and internet service. I’m currently piggy-backing on my neighbor to write this. Verizon has stood us up twice for a home repair visit and claim they won’t get to us till next week. Does anyone have any better experience with another carrier?

I use Time Warner phone and internet service and hardly ever have a problem with them. It only went down once since the 2 years I had this service and that was for a little time.

I've had lots of problems with my DSL with Verizon. I learned the secret to dealing with them last year. Once they stand you up for an appointment, call back on the automated line and go through to the "report a problem line. When you get a person, ask to speak with a supervisor. Tell them that you want a credit to your bill for all the time you have been without service back to the day you made the original report of service problems.
Once you've done that, call the billing department. Tell them that you are expecting a pro-rated bill based upon their failure to show and fix the problem. Let them know you'll be seeking another credit if you get stood up again. Make sure that the billing department can pull up the record of your calls and complaints.
The last time I did this, I received a call back from the DSL supervisor every day from the time they finally arived for my service appointment, until I verbally confirmed that my service was working correctly.
Also, be aware that the billing folks are US based, the DSL repair folks are in India. Lots of time, the troubleshooters will tell you that things have been taken care of just to get you off the phone. Make sure you document everything and have the names of the people you speak to as well as ticket #s or order #s so you can track what is going on.

When my dial tone/DSL are out, I find I get better service from Verizon going through the "internet service" technicians than the telephone ones. I have yet to be stood up by them and even got some great Verizon service calls (think Spiderman in a Verizon polo and hard safari hat scaling fences and patio roofs in jungle-like back yards and climbing poles). Awesome.
Unfortunately I don't think cable is really any better. I wound up with DSL after getting annoyed that my cable modem service would periodically drop or slow to a crawl, with the Time Warner folks doing little more than changing my modem repeatedly.

I gave up my Verizon internet for sprint 4g mobile, super fast downloads and I take it wth me every if I need broadband internets. Only problem is it sucks on speed test cause of slight lag, but when you are downloading gigs of stuff it flys. I still can't convince my mom to give up the landline.

http://www.broadbandmap.gov/technology
This map is a year old but since wires take a long time to string it is not horribly out of date. Those tabs at the top change which technology is illustrated. The one I am most interested in is “Fiber to the end user” which I take to mean “Fios” and it looks like it is going to take a long while, darn it.
OP -- so did they fix it *yet*? Sounds abysmal.
