Blooms on 5th — Brooklynian

Blooms on 5th

edited November -1 in Park Slope

I have never been compelled to write a review on any establishment I have come across, but this one I must. I must tell you beforehand, I am not a confrontational person. If anything my BF says that I let people get away with a little too much.

I had ordered a corsage from Blooms on 5th. This was a corsage for my mother who was celebrating her 70th birthday. I ordered it in a timely manner, (5 days prior to pick up). The day I initially went to the shop, a very nice young man assisted me in choosing flowers for the corsage. He was helpful, kind, and I left the store confident they would do a bang up job. The day of pick-up (the same day as mom's bday), they presented me with a corsage that had 2 orchids that looked very much like they were on their last leg. Both flowers were visably brown. The smile I had on my face when I entered the store, quickly disappeared. My BF politely pointed out to the older gentleman (presumably the owner?) that the flowers looked dead. He looked at it and said that's the way they are and the corsage looked beautiful. We said no...they are brown. He told us that they get bumped in the box when they are shipped and he can't help that. Then he proceeded to cut the outer edges, and insited they were fine. Um, no, they were still brown. He then started yelling at us, saying that he had a lot of orders that day and that we can either have it re-done or get a refund. He was yelling while walking away from us, again repeating himself. We first tried to calmly talk to him, but his continued yelling would not allow us. At that point BF started getting loud back. I joined this ruckus telling the man that I was the I was the customer and asking what was wrong with him. A few minutes later, I stood with mouth agape as I could not believe a vendor would ever treat a customer that way. I said I wanted a refund, which I received. As we were walking out, he followed us! He was saying, or rather yelling, that he knows how to do flowers and that if we should have it re-done. And not like any reasonable vendor would do trying to save some business, but yes, yelling at us again!

I have never had experienced anything like that. In the end, I ended up going to ZuZu's Petals. They put a beautiful corsage together for me in an hour.

  • I've never gotten anything at Blooms, but really like ZuZu's.

Last winter, I got really sick and my parents, who live far away, called ZuZu's to have a bouquet of flowers delivered to me. It ended up being one of those days that its snowed a ton and the roads weren't great and the owner WALKED to my apartment in the nasty weather to bring me the gorgeous bouquet on a day when many shops closed early. I was impressed.

  • The ladies in ZuZu's were lovely to me. I told them of my situation. They were not surprised about my experience at Blooms. ZuZu's was very busy that day as well, but they were all too accomodating.

  • Sorry you had such a bad experience. No comment on Blooms but glad to hear that ZuZu came through for you. I am not surprised. the owner and all the people in the shop are lovely, customer oriented.

  • I had to buy a funeral arrangement back in September and used yelp to help me decide between blooms and Zuzu's. Zuzu's won, obviously. They made a glorious arrangement. The reviews on yelp definitely deterred me from blooms.

  • bought an arrangement for V-day for my wife. as they were putting it together i noticed he grabbed a can off of the counter above him and sprayed one of the flowers. it was what essentially amounts to spray paint for flowers.

didn't make a stink, but made a decision to never get flowers from there again.

  • this place is around the corner from me, but I have yet to go there. Now I won't. I'll check out ZuZu's.

  • Absolutely love ZuZu's after receiving flowers from some very special friends at a time when I was really down. Never before has a beautiful floral arrangement moved me so much.

I started using them to send flowers, and every time the recipient has been extremely happy. I cannot say enough good things about their product as well as their customer service.

  • I also like Park Florist (is that the name?) on 7th Ave. I haven't sent anything from there but I buy flowers for myself there occasionally b/c they have really interesting and different things in stock (and it always looks really fresh).
