  • Front or back?!
  • I'd just like to reiterate: ?!

    If this is true ...
  • They had a sign up yesterday saying that there was no drinking in the back patio...the waittress was implying that it was a temporary thing.
  • any indication when the ban would be lifted? by Thursday, I hope?
  • I was there saturday. They said it was a purely temporary "licensing thing".
  • Mooney's! Mooney's!
  • they should have their outdoor license in place by now - it was supposed to be reinstated yesterday.

that church next door keeps giving them shit for everything - including the aardvarks program. BLAH.
  • Its just temporary. Soda will go back to sucking at its normal level soon.
  • I hear O'Connors still doesn't have a tap. nice. even Indigo is getting with the boo-to-bottled-beer program.
  • This isnt about O'Connors being a great bar, its about Soda being a lousy turd of a bar.

BTW, are you going to help O'Connor's lose to Freddy's again? :P
  • I like the beer and the outside bit. food and service are a tad rough. Sepia anyone?

I thought Sepia was a great bar.

But they have cheaper ( $ ) beer than Soda or the Manhattan priced Sepia. I had a $10.00 glass of $10.00 a bottle wine at Sepia a while back........ No More Sepia here ... Soda's fine with me, but O'Connors is my favorite.

yeah, Sepia is pretty pricey and has a distinct lack of buybacks. also, with such high prices, it's kinda shocking that they don't take credit cards. anywho. Soda's tough if you drink bottled beer (you're a Bud drinker, right?) - the pints, which are bigger, are generally the same price as a bottle. and they're pretty good about buy backs.

It's pretty standard in the industry for the price of a glass to be the price of the bottle to the restaurant. That way, they at least break even on one glass even if the rest of the bottle spoils before someone else orders a glass. That's why most places only have very cheap wines by the glass.
  • Alfairnaidia, you're right twice.

    Carnivore,
Come on, Sepia is ridiculous for wine and Beer.
Although, I would stick up for my neighborhood bar bar if I had one.

    Drinks at O'Connors?
    Freddy's?

I haven't gotten wine or bottled beer there, but $4 isn't unreasonable for a pint at most places.

I can't stand Sepia. Besides the prices of wine and some of the beers, it has zero atmosphere. It's like a dead zone. I don't know if I've spent more than 20 minutes there more than once. O'Connors smells bad inside but the prices rock. Freddy's has a lot of local hype, but is pretty wack except for the fact that there is a T.V. and sometimes the bartender relents and lets me watch sports. Music usually blows. Soda is Soda. 1 out of every 20 times is fun.

You need to hit Mooney's and/or Beast and/or the Tavern.
  • My say:

    Soda: Horrible shithole.

Sepia: Only been once and had Brooklyn Lagers @ $4 a pint, which I thought was fair enough. Even got a buyback. Maybe I had a rare experience, but it was good.

Mooney's: Good if you are paraplegic, or for some other reason can't walk to a better bar. It's okay, it's what you'd expect, but it's really pretty boring.
  • Subject: beer pricing

How do you people reason that Sepia is expensive for beer or that O'Connors is cheaper?

"Sepia is ridiculous for wine and Beer."
    "Sepia is pretty pricey"
"[O'Connors is] cheaper ( $ ) beer than Soda or the Manhattan priced Sepia"

Brooklyn Lagers are $4/pint at Sepia. If that's expensive, I have no idea where nearby you can get them cheaper. Now, Budweiser at O'Connors is $3.25, but for a 12 oz. bottle. That means it's .27/oz. For a pint, that's $4.33. So at O'Connors, you're paying $4.33/pint for Budweiser, which is absolute crap beer compared to the B-Lager. And it's in a bottle. I do like O'C for other reasons, but tell me again how that's cheaper? And how Sepia is ridiculous? (For beer, anyway--drinking wine in a regular bar seems odd to me.)

Buyback evdience is necessarily anecdotal, but there was a stretch where 6 straight times I was there the owner bought everyone in the bar a mixed shot. And I've never NOT had buyback there on my 3rd. So at least the generalization that they never buyback is sketchy.
  • Except O'Connors is actually $3 a bottle, therefore making it the same price per fluid ounce as Sepia. Now, some of you may say that Bud is crappy, or whatever (i happen to like) but the fact does remain that it is ICE FUCKING COLD, something that you can't get at Sepia. Also, where O'Connors really comes in handy is liquor. If you know what you're doing, you drink your beer AND your whiskey. And the whiskey is CHEAP at O'Connors.

Combine everything and I call O'C's the clear winner. Others may say Sepia has more points going for it, and that's fine, but at least we can all agree that Soda sucks.

    Exactly!

As far as where you can get a pint of BL cheaper, the only place I can think of is Soda during happy hour, when they're $3. Sepia has $2 BL during their happy hour, but that's for a smaller glass (not sure how many oz.), not a pint.
  • As far as I'm concerned, all of the bars around here are booty except for Ripple. I like Indigo too, and it will only get better during the summer with their renovation.
  • Tony Balls wrote: Now, some of you may say that Bud is crappy, or whatever (i happen to like) but the fact does remain that it is ICE FUCKING COLD, something that you can't get at Sepia.

We refer to any beverage that is this cold as "OC's cold". Doesn't matter where we are either. A compliment of the highest level would be opening a beer, taking a sip and proclaiming "Wow, that is OC's cold".
  • me saying Sepia is pricey is based on wine. I like their cava a lot. it went from being $7/glass to $8/glass. and the last several times I've been there, I've gotten zilch on buybacks. I'm a very generous tipper, too.

actually, generous tipping is usually my buyback test - if I tip twice the "normal" tip amount and don't get a buyback, I figure the bar can fuck right off.

that said, I still go to Sepia a few times a month - it's a block away from me (sorta) and I like the vibe.

    my bar tally:

I really like Indigo and Soda. Sepia and Ripple are convenient, though Ripple bartenders have been real assholes to me in the past. Tavern on Dean pretty much kicks ass, but has a tiny bar and really cranky old man patrons, so I don't go there to drink generally. Freddy's and Mooney's have awesome jukeboxes, but Mooney's is too busted to be a regular spot, and Freddy's is just too damn far away. OC's is in Park Slope, so who cares?
  • i've only gone to sepia the one time, because i felt it was too pricey. reading these notes, i wondered why i felt that way. $4 for a pint is fine.

then i remembered what caused the bad feeling: that $2 happy hour special. i saw the sign, ordered the beer, got charged $4 (as part of a bigger bill, so i didn't realize right away) and felt cheated. later i found out the $2 was for a smaller glass, but the sign (that night; may have changed) did not mention it and neither did the bartender. which i thought was kinda lousy.

yeah, it's a bit of a sham. I'm not sure why they do that.
  • Sepia is mad boring. The people in there are boring. The music is boring. Once I had and excellent cabernet sauvignon there. That was the only good experience I have ever had there. It really sux my big huge b---s.
