"A contemporary mind with the true potential of the future, Rafiq Bhatia is definitely an artist to look forward to hearing." —Billy Hart, legendary drummer
Rafiq Bhatia (pronounced rah-FEEK BAH-tia) is a composer, guitarist, and bandleader. A first-generation American born to immigrants of East-African Indian descent, Bhatia recently moved to New York, where he has collaborated with an array of artists including Billy Hart, High Priest aka HPrizm of Antipop Consortium, The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Vijay Iyer, Alexander Overington, Valgeir Sigurdsson, and others. His ensemble, which features Jeremy Viner (woodwinds), Jackson Hill (bass), and Alex Ritz (drums), has toured extensively across the eastern and midwestern United States, and was featured as a Critic’s Pick by The Boston Globe in 2010.
Bhatia recently put the finishing touches on his debut album, Yes It Will, which features his longtime collaborators alongside groundbreaking pianist/composer Vijay Iyer, legendary drummer Billy Hart, and members of some of America's finest new music ensembles, including the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), as well as the ACME, JACK, and MIVOS string quartets. Bhatia and producer Alexander Overington use the studio as a compositional tool to frame the interaction of the artists; the improvisers were recorded first, and the performances captured inspired the composition of additional layers for electronics and instrumentalists, including the new music artists. The album was mixed by the renowned producer/composer Valgeir Sigurdsson at his Greenhouse Studios facility in Reykjavik, Iceland, and was mastered by engineer Joe Lambert. Release details TBA.
