Kittens underground!
I was just at the Franklin Avenue subway station waiting for the northbound shuttle a little while ago when I saw out of the corner of my eye something gray moving near the tracks on the other side. Of course I assumed it was going to be a rat, but it was a teeny, teeny kitten! Then I noticed the mama cat poking around a little further away, and soon two more kittens -- these two were both orange -- scurried out. They played around for a couple of minutes and then all disappeared from view under the edge of the platform. It looks like they have a nest just beneath the bench on the southbound platform side.
That hardly seems like a safe place for them to be, eh? Would this be a job for the TNR folks, or is there someone else I should call? I hate to think about any of those kittens getting squished by a train.

Which Franklin Ave station? I think that I've heard talk of these - well, the mom and the last litter...

Yeah, they were spotted the previous kitten season... I don't know what they can do about it, but I'll let 'em know that there's a new litter around. Actually, some trappings are going on this week...

i haven't seen the kittens yet, but if the mama is that grey cat who (looks like she could possibly be a mostly-grey calico?), she does seem to know what she's doing. i about had a heart attack the first time i saw her, but she always gets well away from the tracks in plenty of time.
though kittens..... [shudder] -

Yep, that's her! I saw her one other time a few weeks ago, but this was the first time I saw the babies. Made me nervous as hell, although I guess they know to skedaddle when the trains are coming in.

I think on the PH board there was a discussion a few months back about a feral colony living near the station. They could be apart of that colony.
