WRITTEN IN STONE: TALES OF GREEN-WOOD WALKING TOUR

The monuments and mausoleums of Green-Wood have many fascinating stories to tell and some of the most interesting are not about the most famous. Join Green-Wood tour guide Ruth Edebohls to visit the final resting places and hear the stories of the Indian Princess, the girl who died on her 17th birthday, the heartbroken husband who waved good-bye to his wife in the morning never to see her again, the man who built “The Funny Place,” an inventor and his dog, and many more. A tourist attraction 150 years ago, Green-Wood today still has the power to draw us and keep us coming back with its beauty, grandeur and history. Walk may be hilly and strenuous—wear good walking shoes.

Walking tour: $10 for members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund / $15 for non-members. Reservations strongly recommended.

THE SPOON RIVER PROJECT

Imagine sitting deep within Green-Wood Cemetery on a beautiful summer’s night when some of its permanent residents begin to appear in the distance, assemble in front of you, and one by one divulge their secrets, their private thoughts, their regrets and the turmoil that filled their lives.

“If you want to know what life is about, listen to the dead.

That is . . . when they talk to you.”

Accompanied by songs including “Shall We Gather at the River,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “In the Gloaming,” 11 actors tell a story of the fictional town of Spoon River through its residents who have since left this world. Playwright Tom Andolora of Brooklyn College has adapted the classic American work by Edgar Lee Masters for the stage and directs the production as well.

HOT TIME IN THE OLD TOWN: THE GREAT HEAT WAVE OF 1896

AND THE MAKING OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT

“An engrossing account of this forgotten episode . . . A hell of a story.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Excellent read.” —Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

105 years ago this summer, the 1896 New York City heat wave—one of the worst natural disasters in American history—killed almost 1,500 people (scores of whom are interred at Green-Wood). The heat coincided with a pitched presidential contest between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan and the progressive efforts of police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt to aid the city’s poor. Edward Kohn vividly captures the tale in Hot Time in the Old Town, which will be issued in paperback this summer. Afterward Kohn’s talk, join Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a visit to the gravesites of many of the victims, as well as selected notables of the period.

Book talk: free. Reservations recommended. Reserve at 718.768.7300. Trolley tour: $10 for members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund / $20 for non-members. Reservations strongly recommended.

schemers lie next to those of a more virtuous disposition. You’ll also enjoy the visual delights of Green-Wood, its trees and ponds and its sculpture and buildings by the leading artists and architects of their time. Walk may be hilly and strenuous—wear good walking shoes.
