The intense need to bring the local music community together from it's splintered ends, and to fill the obvious gap for a local music festival that's centered at one main base: These are two of the reasons local music stalwarts Bennett Miller and Julia Haltigan jumped to the task of throwing Brooklyn's first ever Independent Music Festival, rocking the roof off Littlefield Performance Space over the course of 3 days this Fall - September 16, 17 and 18, 2011.
Why should such a music-oriented city rely solely on CMJ - the annual showcase of musicians from all coasts and spanning 50 or so bars - when there's a hugely thriving local scene here, screaming to be heard outside the confines of the internet? Why not a festival where fans and musicians can meet and collaborate, all at one amazing venue? Where it's okay for amped up mainstage sets and acoustic sideshows to mingle? The main focus of this Festival is on celebrating the local independent scene and uniting it's elements to create an even stronger and more dynamic artistic exchange, as well as offering heightened visibility and a broader audience to participating bands.
"Before [social networking] the only way to get your music heard initially was to be part of a vibrant local scene. You went to shows, hung with other musicians, and physically were there with everyone else." states co-organizer Miller. "The internet is amazing, but it's no substitute for personal interaction. That's the reason for this Festival. We want artists and fans to be exposed to eachother's music in an intimate way that will help unite all the fragmented corners of this local scene."
And it has started to buzz already, with a number of musicians already signed on, and more applications coming in as the word gets around. Special guest performers will be announced down the road, as well as various other programming thrown into the mix. Littlefield - actively supportive of this event and its mission - offers the opportunity of programming on 2 stages, in a gorgeous warehouse-turned-club space, with a full bar, sound system, and just a few blocks from the subway.
Bennett and co-organizer Haltigan will be making this an annual event, and will be using the Fest - and its website as a guide - to launch their long range plan to organize local touring circuits in and around the Northeast. "These tours will showcase a handful of the Festival's artists. We'll provide bands with a cost-effecive method of touring in the same cities 4 - 5 times a year so as to effectively build their following in multiple markets."
