A 14 year old died after being shot in the head. Unfortunately, this is commonplace in that area.
NYPOST Blotter:
A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head last night outside a Crown Heights bodega, cops said.
Tyrek O'Hara-Morris was shot at 8:30 p.m. at Park Place and Troy Avenue.
The victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he died.
Cops said they were questioning three people, but no charges had been filed as of early today. -
My office is around the corner from there and one of the neighborhood people told me that the shooter, who was on a bicycle and also about 14, asked the kid if he had a problem with him and wanted to fight him. Next thing that happened was that the kid was shot twice.

Updated, 12:43 a.m. | An 18-year-old was arrested Thursday for the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the police said. The victim, Tyrek O’Hara-Morris, was shot once in the head at the corner of Park Place and Troy Avenue, about five blocks from his home on St. Marks Avenue, around 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, the police said. Dequan Edwards, also of Crown Heights, was charged with murder. It appeared that Tyrek had been involved in a dispute before the shooting, the police said.
This murder received a lot of press over the past two days:

To say it is commonplace in this neighborhood would be a stretch, whether you call it Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Weeksville or whatever Assemblyman Jeffries prefers this week.
-
Actually, there have been three. The murder by Weeksville Houses that occurred last week has yet to be counted in the released stats. Last year there were 20 murders and 75 people shot in Community Board 8. If on average more than one person gets shot per week in an area about 1.5 square miles, I would say its commonplace. Also, most of the shootings occur on the eastern end of the community board zone near where this shooting took place. On the other hand, relatively take place in the Prospects Heights section.
Unfortunately, the hot weather brings about more violence, thus to make conclusions by looking at the 2011 stats are meaningless because the warm weather has just begun.

Readers may not be aware that SOS Crown Heights is able to exist as a result of being awarded funding from a federal Department of Justice program which views violence as a public health problem. While some of the credit for getting the grant may go the skills and track record of Center for Court Innovation/Crown Heights Mediation Center, I think it is important to realize just how competitive this funding is, and how only communities with entrenched, senseless gun violence were able to get it, such as East New York, Harlem, Detroit, and Chicago's South side.
Crown Heights also deserved, and received an award.
The NYPD has consistently reached similar conclusion about the neighborhood by designating areas of Crown Heights (such as the area around Franklin Ave) as Impact Zones
In part, this violence is due to established gangs in the area, activity which has been the subject of high profile FBI attention.
While gun violence and crime affects all of Crown Heights, its is worst in Eastern Crown Heights. In recognition of this fact, SOS recently requested permission to reduced to its target area from the entire 77th Pct to the area statistics show as being most affected by gun violence: A square with the sides of Eastern Parkway, Atlantic Ave, Kingston Ave and Utica Ave.
This permission was granted.
Are there more more violent areas in New York City? Sadly, yes.
Some of these areas are lucky enough to have grass roots organizations like SOS, such as SNUG-ENY, or Harlem Mothers SAVE.
To make a long story short, gun violence is way too commonplace throughout Crown Heights, and it is worst in the specific area the SOS has chosen to target.
I hope to see you at the next shooting response.

Just to be clear, I do not mean to suggest that shooting are commonplace throughout community board 8, but they are in certain areas. Troy and Park Place, which is right across the street from Albany Houses, is one of these cross streets. As evidenced by the fact that someone was murdered in front of the same bodega last year.
Lastly, the square block encompassing Troy and St. John's (just two blocks away) had 5 separate murders in 2008 alone.

Nice job Sergeant Robert Maloney, Police Officer Danny Fana and Police Officer Steven Minucci.

This boy was murdered June 2, 2010.
A two year anniversary of his life and death was held tonight, June 1, 2013:

-
What became of the perp?
-
He was originally charged with Murder in the 2nd, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. He seems to have spent about a year after his arrest on 6/2/2011 in detention on Rikers.

This seems to be the same guy (but that it is not certain).
http://nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov/GCA00P00/WIQ3/WINQ130If so, he:
-ultimately ended up being sentenced on Criminal Possession of a Weapon
- is now in the custody of NYS Dept of Corrections.
- will be out as early as 11/1/2017, or as late as 11/27/2018. -
I'm sure he'll be fully rehabilitated by then.

i know this was two years ago (still hurts) but i like to play this song loudly throughout the neighborhood; especially with summer approaching. we dont have to go jail or die.
