Would people be interested in getting Free WiFi in Park Slope?

DUMBO just set up a free WiFI network for their whole neighborhood.

If you are interested people are talking about it here: http://www.romio.com/question/760

  • I assume this would be "free" in the same sense that public schools, garbage pickup, police, etc are "free"? i.e. you'll be forced to pay for it via taxes whether you want/use it or not.

  • When I lived in Houston a similar prgram was implemented and the neighborhood got about 6 months of free WiFi but then the bottom fell out. Once you got addicted to the ease and availability they introduced the pricing plan. Sadly the addiction was too strong for most to break and so many became slaves to the once free WiFi. This is a similar ploy.

  • Can't parks be reserved for recreation, lawns, shady trees, quiet, absence of technology? Some peace, maybe?

  • I am not convinced of the security of these "free" wifi networks. Quite frankly, there are plenty of private sector providers of wifi hotspots, and I am not convinced that we need a government body getting involved in the wifi ISP business.
