There will be opera on the Gowanus next week!

Venetian Opera in Brooklyn's Venice: Vertical Player Repertory presents Cavalli's La Calisto at Proteus Gowanus, on the banks of the Gowanus Canal.

Vertical Player Repertory, based in Cobble Hill since 1998, has established a reputation for bringing opera to unconventional Brooklyn locations such as the Red Hook Marine Terminal. From July 8-16, 2011, the indie opera company will perform Francesco Cavalli's 17th century comedy La Calisto outdoors under the stars in the gritty post-industrial courtyard of a 19th century factory building, home of the interdisciplinary gallery and reading room Proteus Gowanus (534 Union Street at Nevins Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215).

Performances are scheduled for Friday July 8, Sunday July 10, Thursday July 14, and Saturday July 16, with rain dates on Saturday July 9, Monday July 11, Friday July 15 and Sunday July 17. All shows are at 8pm. Tickets are $30, available at brownpapertickets.com/event/180732, or by phone, 800-838-3006.
