  • Probably not. But if you go to the self service checkout at the Key Food on 7th Ave when they are not busy you can spend all you want with just change.

I just bought all my food with $30 in nickels and dimes and nobody cared

  • There was a machine in the bank at 5th Ave and 1st St. that would let you dump in a mixed bag of change, sort and count the change, and print out a chit which you'd bring to a teller and exchange for cash. Is that called a coinstar?

I last used it a year or so ago, so I don't know whether it's still there.

  • TD Banks charge a fee now

  • Coinstar says they have machines at the 5th Avenue Key Food and at Pathmark at Atlantic Center...anyone know if they really do?

  • They are probably not free.

  • Banks usually count the change of small businesses, and "preferred customers" for free.

Do you know a small business owner or well off person well enough that they would do you a favor?

  • When we opened our Capital One account about six months ago, the bank officer told us that there was a coin counting machine at the downtown Brooklyn branch, but I don't see it advertised on their website. The Coinstar machines in retail locations charge a 9.8% fee unless you buy a gift card for one of their partners, which include Amazon.com, Stop and Shop and iTunes. TD Bank's website says that their customers can use the Penny Arcade machines for free, but non-customers pay 6% (waived if you open an account with them). Both Coinstar's and TD Bank's websites have locators telling you where the machines are located.

  • Key foods does have a coin machine, the fee is worth it compared to the time and energy wasted rolling your own change for the bank.

  • There is one in Key Foods on 5th Ave. They charge a little to change change to cash but you get your full money's worth if you get it in the form of a coupon. There are quite a few good options like Amazon.
