Free movie night tonight, LaunchPad, Franklin Ave

TONIGHT at LaunchPad: Kings County Cinema Society presents a local short and the feature that's been called "the first epic American indie" ... free/free popcorn/BYOB

First, ADAN (2009, 25min), written and directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Gabriel Long, who will join us for a Q&A after the film. “In the wake of a school shooting, Miguel Correos must leave his home in Ecuador to search for his childhood friend in New York City. Adan has played at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, the Sin Fronteras Film Festival, and the Tulipanes Film Festival.”

Followed immediately by EL NORTE (US/UK, Gregory Nava, 1983, 139min) an entrancing drama about the immigrant experience, told in three parts. “El Norte is a realistic picture of both the Guatemalan government’s oppression of the Quiche Indians and the hard life of illegal immigrants in the United States. After the Guatemalan army destroys their village of San Pedro, two teenage Quiche Mayan Indian siblings journey north through Mexico to the United States to start a new life. As they journey through Mexico, the siblings encounter a number of helpful individuals who direct them towards the U.S./Mexican border. There they find a “coyote” and make the frightening run across the border… they are introduced to the impossible realities of life as an illegal immigrant in Los Angeles.” ~ Brian Whitener, Rovi. A must-see.

"A great film, one of the year's best... with fantastical images that show us the joyous hearts of these two people [...] Not one of those docudramas where we half-expect a test at the end, but a film like The Grapes of Wrath that gets inside the hearts of its characters and lives with them." ~Roger Ebert

TONIGHT! Wed. July 27, 8:00pm at LaunchPad: 721 Franklin btw Park/ Sterling Pl. 2/3/4/5 to Franklin Ave. Free, popcorn provided, BYOB. Get there in time for Adan; it's a wonderful short. KCCS hosts at LaunchPad the fourth Wednesday of every month, and across Brooklyn. Keep in touch.
