Free showing of Afro-Punk tonight (Wed) at LaunchPad!

Brooklyn's Kings County Cinema Society is again at LaunchPad tonight, Wed the 28th 8pm...where they're hoping to capture some of the energy of Brooklyn’s Afro-Punk festival, which was sadly cancelled this year due to Hurricane Irene. A special screening of the excellent doc Afro-Punk, which crystallized a movement and launched one of the best and most unique summer festivals in NYC.

James Spooner’s groundbreaking doc AFRO-PUNK (2003, 66min)

explores issues of race identity within the punk scene in the US and abroad, using four compelling subjects to look at exile, interracial dating, black

power, and the dual livesled by people of color in communities that are primarily white. Featuring Bad Brains, Tamar Kali, Fishbone, Dead Kennedys, Candiria and TV on the Radio, among others.

++ a big-screen presentation of “Nine Types of Light” (2011, 60min) the album-length film accompaniment to TV on the Raido’s new LP. Directed by a range of friends of the band and filmmakers, and overseen by Tunde

Adebimpe, it’s an epic mash-up of music videos, interviews and feature narrative.

++ Bk-based filmmaker Gabriel Long will start off the night by discussing the kickstarter campaign for his upcoming doc IN NO PLACE, about a ‘60s civil rights campaigner who went on to defend inmates at Guantanamo Bay in 2008.
