Cable TV

TW is your best bet for broadband, and your only choice as a cable company, excepting dish things. DSL is your only only other option for broadband.
-
THANKS!
-
My 2 cents (but also do a search in this forum): cable modem and dsl broadband are both very site specific. cable modem worked great at my old apartment but sucked at my house, where I now have DSL. Have heard them same from others about DSL. Has to do with the mysteries of "signal strength," etc., I guess. You may just have to pick one, try it and be ready to switch. I too wish there were a cable TV alternative to TW.
-
Funny, in Prospect Heights we only have Cablevision, and I wish I could go back to TimeWarner. The cable modem is similar for the 2 services, but the Time Warner TV is better, with a much better interface for the channel menu. The customer service sucks for both.

right now i dont think they offer fios in nyc but hehe when they do. its gonna kick he pants off both cable and dsl.

Does anyone who doesn't have DSL actually have a landline anymore? If they don't offer FIOS without phone service, they're going to have a tough time convincing cable modem people to switch.

No one's been able to demonstrate an association so far, despite lots of research and several decades of use. It could be a risk, but there's no proof yet. -

Right ... and if you and I could each choose from both, both would be forced to be better. -
putting the discussion of brain tumors aside...
if you can find another way to get DSL (earthlink? verizon? i use the latter) then your best TV value is the dish. tons of channels, great service, cheaper than cable and i don't have to patronize the evil time warner. -

Right, but if you wouldn't otherwise have a landline, you have to figure that extra expense as part of the equation (at least 25-30 bucks a month).

that's true, i have a land-line.
my landline/unlimited calling plan is $39 (plus $900 in taxes), my DSL is $30 (i think), and my dish is $40. total, @$110.
i'm sure i could do better... anyone? -

Let's try to keep this thread on-topic. -

no scientifically demonstrable association as of yet
but my intuition says all that radiation has to have some effect -

nah. you got a good deal. i doubt you can do better

except if you get rid of the dish and netflix instead  -
i also have netflix... however, my brother was able to get tivo on his dish for an extra $5 per month, with the dvr being free.
note also that i don't have premium channels (like HBO), but i have local ones (except NY1), and tons of good ones. like i said, i'll do what it takes not to have to give time warner any of my business.
and reception and customer service on the dish are pretty exceptional -
If you're already paying for a cellphone anyway, you could ditch the landline and get cable and a cable modem for a little less than satellite service, landline and dsl combined (once you take into account all the taxes and fees on your landline).
-
true, but then i'd have to give time warner $$.
won't do it unless i have to. they're evil.  -

if you have netflix you really don't need cable tv

except for sports and stuff. like the world cup
but for that anyways, it's best to enjoy at a pub
i don't have a tv. because the amount of commercials
dilutes its worth
cable is good. but if you're getting it just to watch the sopranos
that's a lot of money to see one show
i liked when the blah blah lounge showed Sex in the City
on its big display tv and everybody came to watch it with drinks
ok. end. tangent.
hate tw?
ditch it babe!
greg should really post on more topics than just GMO stuff * -

NetFlix my good man. NetFlix...
from WikiPedia -- Kids in the Hall:The Pit of Ultimate Darkness (Simon and Hecubus)
"The Pit of Ultimate Darkness" was based on a horror show which tried to be scary but failed greatly at it. It featured Sir Simon Milligan, a man possessed by demons - polite demons that carry old ladies' grocery bags, but demons nonetheless. Kevin McDonald played Sir Simon, while Dave Foley co-starred as Simon's manservant Hecubus, whose strong sense of mischief provided much of the sketches' humor. While superficially he appears to be Milligan's fawning lackey, even addressing Milligan as "master," he actually delights in annoying Milligan at every opportunity. For example, Hecubus once spoiled the ending of Presumed Innocent to Simon. At such times, Milligan will point at him and yell, "evil!"
The other members of the cast would often rib Kevin McDonald and ask why he hadn't named the character in the Hecubus scene - knowing full well that the character was named Simon - as a reference to the fact that fans would generally only remember Dave Foley's part of the sketch. According to DVD commentary, McDonald was originally to play Hecubus, with Mark McKinney as Simon. However, McDonald lobbied for the role of Simon, and after winning it, insisted that Foley should play Hecubus. McKinney ended up appearing at the end of the first sketch as Satan, who would go on to become a recurring character in his own right. -

bogota has fish tacos. i love fish tacos. the passionfruit margaritas are pretty swell, too.

AH, you gotta love a woman with a need for the trek. Seeing as this thread has gotten geeky, there is a 10pm showing of Superman at the Pavilion today. I'm heading there with a friend seeing as I won't be able to see it for two weeks otherwise. -
i still have a landline. those cell phones give you cancer
Following 9/11 and the last blackout I determined that the landline is still the most reliable in a real emergency, so therefore I remain Verizon's bitch
