Staircase B Summary

Tina Williams, grad student and political activist in the turbulent early 70’s, is struck and killed by a hit and run driver at midnight in a small New Jersey town. Despite the driver leaving the scene, the police investigation concludes that Tina’s death was an accident.

At funeral services, friends and fellow students mourn Tina’s untimely passing. Two of the graveside mourners, close friends of Tina, 30 years later will become the Democratic Party candidates for President and Vice President.

Brit Nevins, 30-year-old political columnist for the Newark Star Ledger, begins a series of interviews with the Democratic candidates, and promptly starts experiencing disturbing visions as she conducts her interviews.

The unwanted visions focus on sexual promiscuity, drugs and blackmail, all involving younger versions of Brit’s interviewees. At first she attempts to ignore them when medical causes for the unwanted and frightening visions are ruled out.

A serious attempt on Brit’s life convinces her that her visions may be showing her the real events that led up to Tina Williams’s death 30 years ago. Wanting answers she devises a daring and dangerous plan to expose the murderer, even though it may bring the Democratic Party to its knees.
