weekend getaway or day trip?
i know it's REALLY late notice, but does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere fun/interesting to go for the 4th that can be reached and enjoyed by train?
are there any cute towns in CT or PA or MA or somewhere that might have a parade or fair or something?
also, which beach(es) (also accessible by train or subway) is the nicest, in your opinion?
i'd like to do something out of the city, but don't have a car or a lot of money!
thanks!

LIRR has trains that will take you to Fire Island or the Hamptons. I prefer Fire Island myself

if you wish to stay within nyc
or close to. you can always take the trains and buses to brighton beach, coney island, plum beach/ marine park/ national gate way park. or quick car ride like half hr or so to long beach(one of my favorite ones that is near nyc) they do have 1 hotel i think.
other wise if you wish to do things on a budget. you can always hope on a chinatown bus and do round trips around the tristate area for like $20 or so. -
Long Beach is great, beautiful beach and some very good reataurants/bars.

Believe it or not there are cute towns in NY too! Cold Spring-on-Hudson is one option - about an hour north of the city and you can get there on Metro North. Don't know what kind of July 4th festivities they're planning but it's worth checking out some time even if you don't go this weekend.
