Beer hall coming to 4th Ave. in Slope

Last night Community Board 6?s permits committee approved a full liquor license for a 4,000-square-foot beer hall at 84 St. Marks Place, off of 4th Avenue. The bar will hold 200 people, have 30 German draft beers, and an indoor grill serving simple, Cologne-style German food. It’s going to be run by the current manager of Der Schwarze Kölner on Fulton Street in Fort Greene. The space, which is all indoors, will be open from 2 p.m. into the evening on weekdays, and from 12 p.m. on weekends for brunch

This place would be opening on 5th Avenue (or 7th, some years back before that) if the rent were feasible.

4th Avenue needs to develop neighborhood amenities and have more people on the sidewalks instead of being a desolate strip of iron-gate storefronts.

The traffic will always be there as downtown, area neighborhoods and Manhattan absolutely need major arteries serving it instead of sending big trucks and higher volumes passing through smaller neighborhood streets.

With restaurants it will be more like 1st, 2nd and 3rd avenues in Manhattan. Busy streets but every bit of shopping and restaurants have made those avenues far more attractive and useful to the public and served the massive shift of people in recent decades back to living in cities. If people in all the new apartment buildings on 4th etc. were not offset by more local restaurants, shopping and other amenities people would complain even more about how overcrowded everything has become in the Slope.

But all that is beside the point.

This is not a sports bar. It's a great niche German restaurant that happens to serve a great selection of foreign and craft beers.

Like so many of the interesting places that have improved 5th from desolate barrio to what it is today and exactly the sort of thing that makes this NYC and Brooklyn, not Applebees in timbuktu.

Der Schwarze Kölner on Fulton Street in Fort Greene is really nice.

I don't think they even have a TV for sports, but they might. It is hard to look for a TV when you are eating a sausage and drinking a large beer.

Thanks for the heads up! A really good piece of info. This would back onto my garden so I'm happy to hear it doesn't have outdoor space!( Though I am not aversed to supporting a local bar! ) Of course I can hardly complain. I bought my property 3 years ago because the location was a good balance between nice leafy PS and an up and coming hood on 4th. ( Yes I do remember when 5th Ave was a backstreet! )

Can't help wondering if I should cough up for sound proof glass in the new windows we're planning having fitted. Maybe thats a new post...

Yeah I think any worries that this is going to be a "sports bar" are misguided. Total German beer heaven is more accurate. Although I am sincerely hoping that during World Cup 2014 they put up some projection screens so you can post up all day to drink good German brew and watch the greatest game in the world. That will be bliss.

But I'm just splitting hairs. Beer hall is a better term for it.

My question is this: Does the neighborhood really need this? I recently walked by another big "beer garden" place on 3rd ave around 11th street and it was completely empty. While the bar I was going to, Lowlands, had a great local mix going on.

Biergarten absolutely has to do with being in a garden. The definition of garten is garden. Traditionally speaking beer gardens (or biergaerten) occur in outdoor areas in the south of Germany, although it has become more countrywide.

In regards to kindergarten, children grow in Kindergarten, as plants would in a regular garden. Another definition would be chilren's garden.

Spent a bit of time in Munich and the distinction is taken very seriously when it comes to what can be called a biergarten. Must be outdoors, Must brew beer on the premesis and the shade must be provided by chestnut trees. There aren't many traditional gardens left and what we have here are more reminiscent of the beer houses you find during October fest. (which is in September but don't tell anyone because they won't believe you)

Time will tell. Beer gardens are doing quite well these days.

How long has the third ave one been open? What time of day was it? is it a good beer garden or a crappy bar in a big room?

maybe puckbrooklyn is referring to draft barn. which is crowded some days, completely empty others. incredible selection, but the booths are horribly uncomfortable.

Draft Barn does give off that "how do they stay open?" vibe. The beer selection is top notch, but the prices, particularly with a lot of the food, seem a tad high.
