Construction Workers Doing Well Following Trench Collapse
June 27, 2006
Two workers pulled to safety Tuesday from the rubble of a construction accident in Brooklyn are said to be doing fine.
The two brothers were covered with dirt and debris when a wall collapsed at a work site on 11th Street and Third Avenue in Park Slope.
Nearly 100 police officers, firefighters and EMT workers responded to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. It took them about an hour to rescue the workers, hustling them off to waiting ambulances.
“Obviously the walls collapsed in on the workers because they weren't structured properly. They weren't supported properly," said FDNY Assistant Chief Edward Kilduff.
When first responders arrived, one man was buried up to his neck, and the other was buried completely, rescue workers initially didn't even realize he was there.
“It had to be brought to our attention that there was another worker in the hole,†said Chief Kilduff. “At that time, one of the members of 239 went over, found him, immediately found his head, cleared off an airway for him, and got him a little bit above ground."
Then rescue workers began to dig with their hands and with trowels. A Con Edison vacuum truck was even called in to help suck out the dirt and debris faster.
It took almost 90 minutes to free both men, but rescuers said they remained alert throughout, and at least one worker was able to communicate even without speaking fluent English.
"The entire time he kept on giving thumbs-up. He knew his situation, and he really wasn't complaining of much pain at all," said FDNY Paramedic Joel Pierce.
Workers were preparing to lay the foundation for a new warehouse at the site of the trench collapse, but for now there will be no further work.
The Department of Buildings said its preliminary investigation backed the Fire Department finding that the seven-foot trench was unsupported and that work on the site didn't match the approved permits.
Three violations and a stop-work order have been issued.
