palm sugar? — Brooklynian

palm sugar?

I'm desperate for my favorite sweetener. Thai Taste palm sugar. It's really more of a syrup or sap than hard sugar and that brand is nothing like the palm sugars all the stores around here have (in taste and texture).

Anyone seen this product in a local store? I used to get it at Fairway but they haven't had it for a while and I can't find it online (I found one place on amazon and ordered it but it hasn't come and I can't contact the seller). Help me find it! I'm having stomach problems and have very few things I can really enjoy without trouble and this stuff was making some of those things tolerable.

  • Apparently, it's very rare stuff. The online sites that do sell it have a minimum of 6-17 ounce containers. Maybe some supermarkets in one the Chinatowns have it? I'll buy two off of you if you decide to buy online.

  • I would have no problem buying 6 at a time but the sites that sell it actually don't have it in stock (backordered with no expected date). :(

    I'm apparently an addict.

I'm wondering if it's actually made/packaged in Thailand and the recent flooding in/near Bangkok has caused a shipping problem.

  • Call these guys. They told me it's special order and it's a two to three week wait @ $40 total.

    MyBrands.com or call 888-281-6400

  • If anyone around here had it, I would wager Natural Land on Flatbush Avenue.

Further afield, I would check Kalustyans on 3rd & E28th(?) in Manhattan.

  • If you can figure out who wholesales the product to retallers, and bring that info to D'Vine Taste on 7th Ave b/n Garfield and Carroll, they will likely try to order it for you. I have found them to be very accommodating.

  • The place I ordered it online finally got back to me and just said it takes a while to get it so I guess it's hard to get it anywhere. I will supposedly have it around November 10th.

I keep checking pretty much every grocery store or bodega I pass though, just in case they have some.

I love the folks at D'Vine, btw. I wish more people shopped there and supported them.

  • Update. My order arrived, as predicted, on the 10th. I still looked for it in every store I thought might possibly have it until then. The Houston St Whole Foods carries it in the ethnic food aisle but was out when I went.
