Success Charter in Cobble Hill? Please, NO!
Eva Moskowitz and her corporation of charter schools, Success Academy, is trying to force one of her schools into Cobble Hill. Only 5% of parents polled said they would even *consider* sending their child to this school. Then why is this proposal still being entertained?

This is an excellent article on why this Success charter school has many frightening implications. We should all be very concerned by the erosion of the democratic process in public education (thanks, Bloomberg). The Success board of directors is made up of hedge fund and private equity firms. Do we really believe their priority is making sure low and middle income school children are well-educated?
Public education is for sale in this city and the 1% is buying it up.

I wish you lots of luck fighting this. My local school (PS 9 in Prospect Heights) had a similar issue and they held hearings which to me was just to placate parents and I feel the BOE had made their decision before any of these hearings.

It definitely is a lot of placating and posturing. The official vote on whether to approve the Success Academy's charter was last night but the Success Cobble Hill website has been up and running for at least several days. Obviously Eva Moskowitz had no doubt that her plans for this school would not be stopped. It really makes you question the democratic process when the community speaks so loudly and basically unanimously against something but it falls on deaf ears. I followed the PS 9 situation and it seemed that the parents were quite united against the placement of a charter school in their building too. It does beg the question, "whose schools?" Mayoral control has been nothing but bad news for public education in this city. More tests, more consultants, more admin and no results. Just more privatization of our schools. Scary stuff!
