‘DRIVING’ AGAINST AUTISM!

‘How Golf is helping children and young adults with special needs’

The Brooklyn Junior Autistic Golfers Academy is returning to the Brooklyn Golf Center on June 2nd, 2012, for their 12week Junior Scholarship Program designed to help children challenged by autism. Golf is used as a powerful tool to help the students develop how to focus, building links and language connections for both students and parents.

Started in 2010 by Charles Lightfoot the Academy boasts such supporters as professional golfer Ernie Els, NY Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and NY Giants ‘Ring of Heroes’ Carl Banks among others. Numerous testimonials and support has been received from parents confirming the success rate of this unique program.

BJAGA programs are open to all parents with junior boys and girls, ages 6-17, with (ASD) special needs. The courses range from basic to advanced instruction as appropriate for each child’s age and skill level. On and off the practice range a professional staff including therapists, artists, actors, and even magician’s coordinates activities! Charles Lightfoot adds that, “Most of all it should be great fun as well as a learning tool!”

The success rate of the program has been phenomenal. It may not produce the next PGA Tour Player (though you never know!) but it has dramatically improved the student’s physical and communication skills along with improving their ability to adapt to interactive social situations. Charles is fond of quoting Dr. Ami Klin, Chief of Autism, Marcus Autism Center Atlanta, GA who said; “Early targeted social engagement with autistic children can be an investment in their future productivity.” The BJAGA course is an outstanding example of this thinking.

Be warned that space is limited so early registration is highly recommended to join the team striving for a ‘hole in one’ against autism!
