Bergen Ice House? — Brooklynian

Bergen Ice House?

Hi All:

It seems like the for sale sign on the Bergen street ice house came down recently (NW corner of Bergen and Franklin). Any word on what's to become of that 33K+ sq ft space? The sign had touted R-6 zoning, which means it could be a large development, potentially. I think the address might be 945 or 949 Bergen. It's a bit hard to tell.

  • We've talked about the building a while ago here:

    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/enormous-building-near-franklin-ave-shuttle-stop

The latest I've heard is the thing won't be torn down, but will instead get a gut renovation that results in market rate rentals or condos, depending upon what is the most profitable when it is completed.

  • I'm slightly confused. The building that came up as the "ice house" was 1024 Dean: http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2011/08/building-of-the-day-1024-dean-street/

    Nassau Brewery Ice House.

Is the building in the first picture (949 Bergen, corner of bergen and franklin) called the "ice house" as well? Was it also a brewery?

I've always thought it was such a beautiful building

  • Confusion is to be expected given A and B.

    A.

Part of your confusion may stem from the building/complex being so large that it has addresses on Dean as well as Bergen.

That said, Big building on corner of Franklin and Dean = 1042 Dean St = former location of Nassau Brewery.

Nassau Brewing Company [1042 Dean Street, Brooklyn]

Nassau was the final name of a fairly successful brewing company in Brooklyn. Founded originally in 1849 as Liberger and Walter, it changed hands in 1866 as Christian Goetz bought the brewery, calling it the Bedford Brewery. He operated it successfully until 1884 when William Brown and a group of businessmen bought the plant. Brown renamed the brewery Budweiser Brewing Company in reference to the quality of beer of Budweis, Bohemia. Inevitably, Anheuser-Busch brought suit against Brown for copying their name, which had been trademarked in 1878. Brown gave in, changed the name to Nassau Brewing Company, and directed the company from 1898 to 1914 when it closed. http://www.nyfoodmuseum.org/bkbeer.htm

    B.

Adamaronson called it the Ice House for unknown reasons.

Regardless of A and B, the fact remains: The present owner of the complex pictured above will reportedly develop it into market rate apartments or condos. If he gets his financing and permits in order, the 'hood will change even more.

  • Thank you both for clarifying. I mistook the brewery building (listed as, 5 Buildings, 943 & 947 Bergen, 1042, 1044, and 1046 Dean Street) for the Ice House, which is at 1024 Dean.

All that being said thanks also for the links to the other thread where you've already discussed what your thoughts are on the project. I am with the consensus that it would be great if the original structure is able to remain. It gives a lot of character to the neighborhood.

  • Heads up, it looks like workers were busy today, 6/13/2013, piling all of the loose interior debris.

Readers, this building has been discussed on multiple threads over the years. I am going to ask the the mods lock this one and that we all post here: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/enormous-building-near-franklin-ave-shuttle-stop#post-769234
